Asmongold, one of the most recognized figures in the World of Warcraft (WoW) community, has noticeably reduced his involvement with the game, even amidst its resurgence in the streaming world. Despite previously being a pivotal content creator for the Blizzard MMO, Asmon’s enthusiasm for it has diminished significantly over the years.
During 2024, Asmongold logged a mere 108 hours playing World of Warcraft, a stark contrast to the 1,420 hours he spent in the Just Chatting category, as indicated by data from SullyGnome. This decline in gameplay hours occurs even though WoW of late has been particularly compelling, highlighted by expansions like The War Within and popular hardcore mode competitions among streamers such as sodapoppin and Tyler1.
Reasons Behind Asmongold’s Departure from WoW
Asmongold offered a candid insight during a Twitch broadcast on December 29, stating simply, “It’s because the game’s f***ing boring.” This blunt assessment underscores his evolving relationship with the game, as he feels he has exhausted its offerings.
In fact, he previously noted that he had amassed a staggering 1,149 days of playtime on a single WoW character.
Feeling Fulfilled Elsewhere
A fan inquired during a stream, “Why aren’t you playing WoW?” to which Asmon acknowledged the ongoing curiosity surrounding his gameplay. “I was one of the main people to make content for WoW,” he said, indicating his deep history with the game.
Despite investing thousands of hours into WoW over the years, he now describes it as “boring and weird.” He elaborated, saying, “I don’t really play the game anymore because I don’t feel there’s anything for me to do that’s fulfilling.” While he hasn’t ruled out a potential return, he emphasized a lack of motivation at present, claiming, “The main reason I don’t have a lot of interest in playing it is simply because I just feel like I’ve done it.”

A Shift in Gameplay Preferences
In light of the recent trend toward hardcore gaming streams, it’s notable that Asmongold is not drawn to this challenge. He expressed that although it’s “the main thing people want me to do,” he instead prefers a more relaxed gaming approach where he doesn’t feel pressured to focus intensely. “I don’t like playing games I have to focus in. Most of the time, I’m not thinking about anything, I’m drifting through consciousness. When I have to lock in, that’s stressful,” he said.
Asmongold candidly concluded, “I don’t feel like I have to earn respect by playing video games, that’s stupid.” His current stance indicates that until news of a new WoW expansion or significant WoW Classic update surfaces, fans may have to wait for his return to the game. While he leaves the door open for change, Asmongold is currently distancing himself from World of Warcraft.
