Assassin’s Creed Origins Facing New Challenges After Windows Update
In December 2024, Assassin’s Creed Origins encountered unexpected difficulties, not stemming from Ubisoft’s typical issues but rather from a recent update to Windows.
Ubisoft has a history of performance hiccups, particularly on PC platforms. Notable incidents include the troubled launch of Watch Dogs: Legion and persistent stuttering problems in older games like Watch Dogs 2. However, Assassin’s Creed Origins stood out amidst these setbacks, achieving an impressive Metascore of 81 on PlayStation 4 and earning acclaim for its stunning graphics, compelling characters, and engaging storyline.
Recently, though, the game has seen a dramatic increase in negative feedback that is unrelated to Ubisoft’s well-documented shortcomings. Initially celebrated for its “Very Positive” reviews on Steam, Assassin’s Creed Origins saw its rating slide to “Mixed” in the Recent Reviews section by 2025. This decline can be traced back to Microsoft’s 24H2 update, which resulted in severe issues such as crashes, black screens, and game freezes for numerous players.
Complications Arise Following Windows Update
While Ubisoft typically faces criticism for performance issues, this time the blame falls solely on Microsoft. After the installation of the Windows 11 24H2 update, players have come forward to report that the game has become virtually unplayable, with many experiencing black screens instead of immersing themselves in the rich world of ancient Egypt.
Although both Microsoft and Ubisoft are working collaboratively to resolve this issue, a lasting solution remains elusive. Currently, the only workaround is reverting back to the earlier Windows 11 version 23H2, a choice that is less than ideal for most users.
The frustration among players is palpable. One Steam user expressed their discontent following Ubisoft’s announcement of a 90% discount during the Assassin’s Creed Origins Winter Sale, only to find the game unplayable on the latest Windows version. Their comment highlighted the contradiction: “Why give a big discount when the game is unplayable on PC? SHAME!”
Looking forward, Ubisoft finds itself at a crossroads as it copes with setbacks from recent titles such as XDefiant and Star Wars Outlaws. With an array of significant releases on the horizon for 2025, including the highly anticipated new entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise and The Outer Worlds 2, the company is faced with the challenge of restoring player confidence.
