Ubisoft has officially announced Assassin’s Creed Shadows, previously referred to as Codename Red.
The game was initially teased during Ubisoft Forward 2022, with promises of the long-awaited Feudal Japan setting.
Developed by AC Odyssey creator Ubisoft Quebec, the full reveal was showcased on May 15, 2024, featuring a cinematic trailer that confirmed the game will feature two protagonists.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ cinematic and gameplay trailers
On May 15, Ubisoft released a cinematic world premiere trailer for AC Shadows, confirming the long-standing rumors regarding the dual protagonists Naoe and Yasuke.
A first-look gameplay trailer debuted during Xbox’s June 2024 games showcase, showing Yasuke and Naoe in action. Check it out below:
Ubisoft Forward 2024 also showcased an extended gameplay walkthrough lasting 13 minutes, emphasizing Yasuke’s raw combat style utilizing heavier weaponry. Naoe is highlighted in the latter part of the walkthrough, deftly navigating through shadows and extinguishing lights as a skilled Shinobi.
A World Trailer for AC Shadows was released in mid-September, offering a glimpse into the open-world settings, including dense forests, villages, temples, and seaside cliffs representative of Feudal Japan.
The video showcases seasonal changes, featuring Yasuke navigating snow-covered areas and Naoe traversing warmer climates.

The anticipated Assassin’s Creed title will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Luna platforms, according to the game’s pre-order page.

Players can look forward to AC Shadows hitting the shelves on November 15, 2024, priced at $69.99.
Special editions for Assassin’s Creed Shadows
In addition to the standard version priced at $69.99, three special editions will also be available.
The Gold Edition costs $109.99 and includes three days of early access, along with a Season Pass that features a day-one bonus quest and two expansions.
The Ultimate Edition, priced at $129.99, includes all Gold Edition benefits plus the Ultimate Pack containing:
- Sekiryu Character Pack: Gear and weapon sets for both Naoe and Yasuke, the Sekiryu Beast, and the Dragon Tooth trinket
- Sekiryu Hideout Pack: 4 unique ornaments for customizing the shinobi hideout

All three versions can currently be pre-ordered, including the ‘Thrown to the Dogs’ quest as a pre-order bonus.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ setting and characters
AC Shadows is set during the intense feudal era of Japan, which spanned several centuries. Late in 2023, reports indicated that two protagonists would guide players through this Japanese era.
Confirmed characters include Yasuke, a historical Samurai, and Naoe, a fictional Shinobi with bondages to legendary figures.
Yasuke’s intriguing history, arriving in Japan in 1579, informs much of how developers integrated factual elements into this Assassin’s Creed narrative.
Conversely, Naoe is derived from Iga province, known historically as the birthplace of Shinobi, and her backstory includes connections to the famous Shinobi, Fujibayashi Nagato.
The protagonists approach the narrative from differing perspectives, with Yasuke favoring combat as a Samurai while Naoe relies on stealth as a Shinobi.
Does AC Shadows always need to be online?
Initially reported as requiring mandatory online play, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows community has now been informed that an Internet connection is only necessary for installation.
