26 Years Later: The Mystery of Punk Hazard Revealed
The chapter opens with a flashback from 26 years ago, showing the lush green forests and palm trees surrounding the Punk Hazard Facility. At the entrance of the facility, Vegapunk (accompanied by 2 dragons) can be seen conversing with Clover.
Despite his desperate pleas for assistance in his research on the “Void Century,”Clover is met with Vegapunk’s refusal to aid him. Vegapunk, now a government employee, reminds Clover of his numerous past arrests and reveals that his freedom to move about is only possible due to the surveillance placed on him, which could lead to the capture of his comrades.
Clove remembers a tragic incident when a man with the initial ‘D’ in his name was killed in front of him. This man was actually his brother, but Clove had to lie in order to protect himself. Upon hearing this revelation, Vegapunk is taken aback. Clove confesses that his true name is Claiomh D.Clover and a small panel shows his brother’s death. In order to save himself, Clove had to lie and claim that he was a friend of the deceased man.
Clover’s emotions continue to pour out as he questions the morality of killing people simply for being born or stating their names. Although Vegapunk is deeply affected by this revelation, he ultimately refuses to assist Clover and chooses to forget the conversation. As Vegapunk walks away towards Punk Hazard, Clover can be heard shouting that he will find a solution, and he is haunted by a voice from his past.
Flashback: 22 Years Ago
The manga then continues with a flashback from 22 years ago, when Vegapunk and Caesar were informed of the destruction of Ohara by the Buster Call. Despite Caesar expressing a desire to witness the massacre, Vegapunk is filled with sorrow.
During his visit to Ohara (which occurred before the flashback in chapter 1066), Vegapunk can be observed shedding tears by the Ohara lake, gazing at a wanted poster of a young Nico Robin. He expresses his sorrow, lamenting that the residents of Ohara perished in their attempt to protect a mere collection of books. He adds that their determination to continue their studies cost them their lives, a foolish choice in his eyes.
Time Skip to Present
As Vegapunk’s broadcast continues, Zeff and Patty remain attentive listeners at the Baratie. Meanwhile, in Tequila Wolf, the prisoners are still being brutally whipped by the guards.
In Egghead, Robin is moved by Vegapunk’s message, which emphasizes the power of winners in shaping history and silencing the voices of the defeated. Vegapunk also reveals that he has uncovered some important truths, which he hopes will be spread to the world through his broadcast. He ends by sending his prayers for the safe delivery of his message.
Atlas to Action
On the Thousand Sunny, Zoro and Jinbe remain while Nusjuro, who was previously blown away, is making his way back. Meanwhile, Lilith prevents the Straw Hat crew from departing, explaining that if Nasjuro reappears in the air, they will be unable to reach the sea.
Out of nowhere, Atlas materializes and strikes Lilith, causing her to fall unconscious to the ground. He then proceeds to deactivate a device attached to Lilith’s head, resulting in a distinct ‘click’ sound. York immediately takes notice of this and informs the others that they have lost Lilith’s signal, leaving only Atlas behind. After conversing with Nami and the rest of the group, Atlas tasks them with ensuring Lilith’s well-being. He assures them that he will handle any remaining obstacles.
Nusjuro is spotted sprinting towards the 1000 Sunny, but before he can reach it, Atlas swoops in and seizes him. Despite Nusjuro managing to sever one of Atlas’s arms, she refuses to release her hold. Utilizing her “DOM shoes”and jet pack, she swiftly moves Nusjuro out of harm’s way. The Thousand Sunny then takes off using its “Coup de Burst”technique.
Breaking News: Meanwhile, in Egghead Shore
As Emeth speaks to Luffy, the latter’s excitement is evident as he lays eyes on the robot. Emeth expresses his happiness in working for Luffy once more. Confused, Luffy searches for the source of the voice until Emeth clarifies that he is the one talking. The robot assures Luffy that he will stand by his side, even against his enemies. Luffy is in awe of the speaking machine before him.
Emeth expresses concern for Luffy’s safety and assures him that he will protect him. Upon Dorry’s command, his crew prepares to set sail. Curious, Brogy inquires if Emeth is part of their crew, to which Luffy responds by recounting their recent conversation. Brogy is surprised since he did not overhear anything.
Despite his old age and weakened physical state, Emeth was unable to defend himself when Ju Peter charged at him. This left Luffy, Sanji, and Franky disappointed as they watched the fight continue. Eventually, Emeth’s arm was bitten by Ju Peter, but he still managed to hold him back. Meanwhile, Saturn took the opportunity to jump onto the Elbaf ship, with Kuma and Bonney in hot pursuit.
Atlas vs Nusjuro
Sanji spots the Thousand Sunny soaring through the sky while aboard the Elbaf ship. As Nusjuro strikes Atlas, he expresses surprise at her willingness to sacrifice herself. However, Atlas responds by stating that she considers it a “service”instead. In a final act, Atlas detonates herself, causing damage to Nusjuro’s face.
The concluding double-page spread of the manga depicts a series of different scenes while Vegapunk’s message continues. In the message, he expresses his desire for more time to devote to his research, but acknowledges that some things cannot be halted. He references the legendary pirate Gol D Roger and his crew, who successfully circumnavigated the globe. As the Thousand Sunny approaches the Elbaf ship, Usopp and Chopper are seen tearfully mourning for Atlas, lamenting that she could not have behaved differently.
The Right Time
Meanwhile, York informs the Five Elders that they have lost Atlas’s signal. She asserts that she is now the only Dr. Vegapunk. Ju Peter disagrees and brings up Stella, who is known for her constant chatter. Ju Peter and Saturn both agree on this point. Warcury declares that they must take action to resolve the situation.
Ju Peter and Warcury launch an assault on Emeth in order to halt the broadcast. As Emeth’s arm shatters, smoke begins to billow out. Emeth acknowledges her own corruption and understands that this is the opportune moment to speak to Joy Boy.
As the manga nears its end, Vegapunk’s broadcast continues to air. He declares that everyone has now heard the unaltered voice of the past and come to understand its significance for the future of the world. The final panel reveals the reactions of the prisoners in Impel Down, who are shocked to learn the name of Gol D. and the implications it holds.
