The latest spin-off manga of Attack on Titan delves into Levi’s backstory, finally providing answers to the lingering questions about his past that we’ve all been curious about.
Despite its 12-year run that left fans in awe, Attack on Titan remains one of the most influential manga and anime of recent times. While the manga concluded in 2021 and the anime in 2023, a spin-off manga is now in the works, keeping the franchise alive.
Hajime Isayama, the creator and artist of the original manga, will be releasing a spin-off manga centered on the fan-favorite character, Levi Ackerman. The one-shot, titled ‘Bad Boy’, will be included in the AOT art book, Attack on Titan Artbook: Fly. This 18-page addition is solely dedicated to exploring Levi’s character.
The anime and manga community is buzzing with excitement over Bad Boy. This is especially true since the recent reveal that the Attack on Titan spin-off finally provides an answer to the biggest question surrounding Levi: how did his powers come to be.
Ever since his debut in Attack on Titan, Levi has consistently been portrayed as one of the most formidable characters in the entire franchise. Despite not being a Titan shifter, he surpasses all of them in strength. This has been demonstrated numerous times throughout the series. Recent readers have verified that Bad Boy explores the origins of Levi’s immense power and the awakening of his abilities as an Ackerman.
The Attack on Titan spin-off manga provides further insight into Levi’s character and background. One interesting detail is the explanation behind his fondness for tea, as shown in Bad Boy. Throughout the story, Levi is frequently depicted enjoying his tea.
In the spin-off, it is revealed that Levi’s love for tea stems from the fond memories of his mother. Kuchel, Levi’s mother, had a tragic life and passed away when he was a child. The Bad Boy spin-off showcases a young Levi sharing enjoyable moments over tea with his mother, providing readers with a deeper understanding of their relationship.
Discussing tea, the Attack on Titan spin-off manga also reveals the reason behind Levi’s unconventional way of holding his cup. This is connected to his relationship with Kuchel. During one of their tea sessions, Levi’s cup handle broke, causing him great sadness. As a result, he has continued to hold his cup in a peculiar manner ever since.
More can be discovered in Bad Boy, which was exclusively released in Japan on April 30, 2024 as a one-shot. Currently, the one-shot can only be obtained in physical form through the Attack on Titan Fly art book. The digital version and global release of the one-shot have yet to be announced.
