Despite not being the protagonist, Levi Ackerman never fails to capture attention with his impressive combat abilities. Even after the series has ended, the excitement remains as one of the most beloved male characters is receiving his own spin-off manga.
The recently released manga Attack on Titan: Bad Boy has delved deeper into Levi’s past and finally provided an answer to one of the most pressing inquiries surrounding him: How did he tap into the power of the Ackermans?
Introduction
In two different timelines, Ackerman power functions in different ways. In the timeline known as “To You, In 2000 Years,”Ackermans are created as accidental byproducts of experiments on Ymir subjects and possess the abilities of titans in human form.
In a different timeline, the Ackermans were a bloodline that served to protect the king of Eldia during the Era of the Eldian Empire. They inherited the battle expertise of their ancestors and possessed enhanced physical capabilities.
Each Ackerman’s powers are triggered by intense stress in their respective stories. It is during these critical moments that their instincts are unleashed and they form a connection with a “host”under those particular circumstances. This connection, known as the “Ackerbond,”has been questioned by some, who speculate that it may have been fabricated by Eren.
The two requirements for Ackerbond mechanics are stated below:
- In times of great stress, Ackermans are known to awaken. Once they have been bound to a host and given a command, they will faithfully carry out their orders. In some cases, these commands become so deeply ingrained within them that they become their default mode of operation, guiding their actions and way of life.
- Their dormant instincts are mistakenly activated when they awaken, causing an instinctual impulse to protect the king. This impulse binds them to their host.
Levi Awakened his Ackerman Powers
Levi’s awakening in Attack on Titan takes place following the death of his mother, Kuchel. After becoming an orphan in the harsh underground city, he was attacked by a group of men who were planning to sell him, just like they did with his mother. However, it wasn’t until they tampered with Kuchel’s memories that Levi discovered his true strength.
Despite being a malnourished child, Levi’s true potential as an Ackerman was revealed when men tried to take away his mother’s only keepsake, a teacup. He bravely fought them off and even managed to tear the face of one of the men with his bare hands.
As previously stated, the conditions necessary for awakening one’s powers can vary. In Levi’s case, his love and determination to protect his mother were the sole factors that triggered his awakening.
Despite the fact that “Bad Boy”is only available in physical copies in Japan and has not yet been released globally, Levi’s transformation and emotional breakthrough make it a must-read for any fan of Attack on Titan.
