The formal registration for Attrakt’s trademark in South Korea was finalized on May 24, almost one year after their initial application in the previous year. According to Jeon Jong-hak, a patent attorney representing Attrakt and the president of the World Korean Intellectual Property Association, the main concern was the inclusion of the group name in Product Classification No. 41. However, since the patent office recognized Attrakt as the rightful owner of the trademark, registering under other product classifications was not a problem.
The trademark applications for China and the UK were both submitted on July 5 of the previous year, and their registrations were finalized on January 7 and November 24 of that same year, respectively. The European Union registration was completed on February 28 of the current year. Additionally, Taiwan has been recently included in the list of registered trademarks.
Jeon clarified that registrations have been successfully finalized in China, the UK, Taiwan, and the European Union. Due to Brexit, a separate registration was necessary for the UK. The European Union registration is now in effect for all 27 member countries simultaneously.
Attrakt has also submitted trademark applications for review in the United States, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. These applications are currently being examined.
The return of Keena to the agency is thought to have greatly contributed to Attrakt’s successful acquisition of the trademark in the majority of countries. While it is typical for the agency providing the initial capital to possess the trademark, the growing impact of individual group members has made their approval essential in the process of obtaining the trademark.
The three ex-members who were against Attrakt have had their exclusive contracts terminated, which has weakened their argument for claiming trademark rights. On the other hand, Keena, a current member of FIFTY FIFTY, is getting ready for new projects, making her agreement a crucial factor in Attrakt’s trademark registration.
At the same time, Keena will be leading the restructured five-member FIFTY FIFTY, which is expected to make a comeback in September. The group’s three former members are currently embroiled in a 13 billion KRW (approximately $10 million USD) damage lawsuit filed by Attrakt, with the first trial scheduled for August.
