From the creators of Fallout: New Vegas and Grounded comes Avowed, a fantasy RPG that embodies Obsidian Entertainment’s renowned combination of immersive exploration and challenging choices.

Avowed release date
The release date for Avowed has been shifted to February 18, 2025. Originally planned for 2024, the title has been rescheduled to prevent any conflicts with other first-party titles.

The fantasy RPG, initially unveiled in July 2020 at the Xbox Game Showcase, underwent significant changes despite being in development for several years. In particular, the tone of the game has shifted significantly when comparing the recent footage to the original reveal trailer.
Avowed platforms
Avowed is set to be launched as an exclusive title for Xbox consoles, indicating that it will only be accessible on PC and Xbox Series X|S. At present, there is no information regarding a potential release on PlayStation or Switch.
Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming fantasy RPG is set in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity.
Story
The heart of the Living Lands, a mysterious region from the world of Eora, is revealed to players through Avowed. This area was first introduced in the Pillars of Eternity franchise. As envoys of the Emperor of Aedyr, you must embark on a journey to explore this land. Your mission is to investigate the rapidly spreading soul plague, also known as Dream Scourge, which has caused concern for the Emperor.
The Living Lands has been characterized as an untamed and uncharted territory, where one may encounter a variety of perilous beasts, some of whom may have been affected by the plague. Though your main objective is to uncover the source of the issue, you will come across conflicting testimonies during your voyage.
Inquisitor Lodwyn is a prime example of this perspective. He strongly believes that the Dream Scourge is a result of the chaos and disunity that plagues the Living Lands. However, Giatta, a companion of Avowed, holds a contrasting view. She sees the chaos as a defining characteristic of the region and believes that trying to control it would only harm the area.
This promptly presents players with a decision to make, and effectively maneuvering through these choices is a crucial element of the RPG.
Avowed Gameplay
Players will be able to build their own combat style to face the different threats in the Living Lands.
Avowed is a first or third-person zone-based open-world RPG. It boasts an abundance of dialogue trees, melee combat, spell casting, and diverse companions. As an Obsidian game, it also offers organic exploration, enabling players to discover new areas, engage with NPCs, and stumble upon side quests.
The Living Lands boasts vibrant locales, featuring unique vegetation such as overgrown mushrooms and picturesque sights that come to life with the game’s day-and-night cycle.
In regards to battles, players will have a wide selection of melee weapons such as swords and axes to choose from. The game also offers bows for those interested in creating archer characters. However, the most captivating aspect of Avowed’s combat mechanics is the spell casting system.
Within your arsenal, you will discover a variety of magic tricks, each featuring stylish animations. These include abilities with fire, ice, gravity, and arcane elements. The combat system is designed to be versatile, allowing for seamless transitions between casting spells, sharpshooting, and engaging in melee combat.
One of the main aspects of the game revolves around your companions. We are already familiar with some of them, such as Giatta, Yatzli, and Kai. Each of these characters can be interacted with in different ways, and their affinity can be increased through dialogue choices.
All of your fellow travelers will gather at a designated spot called Party Camp. Additionally, you have the opportunity to enhance your weapons by utilizing the resources you have collected during your journey at the camp.
Your character’s abilities and attributes can also be improved through upgrades. The game features six attributes, including Might, Constitution, Dexterity, Perception, Intellect, and Resolve. The number of points you allocate to each attribute determines your success when attempting dialogue checks.
