Baby Reindeer Creator Shares Theory Behind Encounter with Real-Life Stalker

Ever since its release, Baby Reindeer has become a sensation on Netflix, partly due to its basis on a true story. As more information is uncovered, Richard Gadd, the show’s creator and lead actor, has shared his theory about the identity of his real-life stalker.

Expect stand-up comedy, stalking, and plenty of personal turmoil from Baby Reindeer.

The focus of the recently released seven-part series is on Donny Dunn (Gadd), a comedian and bartender who must confront his past trauma when he becomes the target of serial stalker Martha (Jessica Gunning).

The Netflix version is based on Gadd’s play with the same title, but it’s remarkable how both are influenced by the writer’s life – even the emails that Martha (Jessica Gunning) sends to him are authentic.

In the first episode, the strained dynamic between Donny and Martha is introduced as she enters the pub where he works, visibly upset. Martha becomes fixated on Donny after he kindly offers her a complimentary cup of tea, out of compassion for her tears.

Gadd really did meet his real-life stalker this way

Gadd appeared on This Morning’s episode today (March 17) and shared that he is uncertain about why his stalker showed up at the pub in tears on that fateful day. However, he speculates that it may have been related to her previous target.

He admitted, “I constantly questioned it,”pondering if this marked the end of her persistent pursuit of someone else and the beginning of her fixation on me. It was possible that she was distressed after being forced to sever connections with her previous target, leading her to seek out a new one.

According to Gadd, the moment he offered her the drink, he had a feeling that something was amiss. “It all began with a complimentary drink, and I could sense it right away,”he recalled. “As soon as I made that gesture, I had a feeling that something was brewing.”

He described it as relentless. It felt like an onslaught on all senses, with messages bombarding him through various forms of media, including emails and phone calls. The issue seemed to consume him constantly, day and night.

Although he faced stalking in his personal life, Gadd was able to resolve the issue and found solace in turning his experiences into art. According to him, expressing his struggles through writing and transforming them into something tangible has been cathartic. In fact, he believes that it has been the most effective form of therapy for him and has even been a lifesaver in his journey towards healing.
