Baby Reindeer: Is Fiona Harvey the real Martha?

Ever since Netflix’s Baby Reindeer premiered, fans have been determined to uncover the true identity of Richard Gadd’s stalker. But the question remains: is Fiona Harvey truly Martha?

The limited series Baby Reindeer continues to dominate the streaming platform’s top 10 chart, gaining immense popularity on the internet.

In the show, we see Donny (played by Gadd, the show’s creator), a budding comedian who also works at a pub while pursuing his gigs. One day, he takes pity on Martha (Jessica Gunning) and offers her a free cup of tea, which leads to her becoming unhealthily obsessed with him.

As Baby Reindeer’s popularity continues to grow, an increasing number of fans are attempting to uncover the real-life inspiration behind the character of Martha. However, the question remains: who exactly is Fiona Harvey?

Despite frequent public accusations of being Richard Gadd’s alleged stalker following the success of Baby Reindeer, Fiona Harvey has consistently denied these claims.

The individual from Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, who is 58 years old, has rejected allegations of being the inspiration behind the character Martha in the play Baby Reindeer. This denial was made both to the media and on social media platforms, after fans discovered that the individual had previously tweeted similar lines to Richard Gadd, which were also used in the show.

In a post on Facebook that has since been deleted, Harvey denies any knowledge of Gadd or being one of his followers. However, she claims to have been aware of his employment at The Hawley Arms in London over a decade ago, when she first moved to the city to work as a lawyer. She also accuses Gadd of being willing to defame anyone and do whatever it takes to make money.

The sentiment expressed in the previous paragraph was reiterated in a later post, which stated, “I would like to remind Richard Gadd’s followers that I am not Martha, but Fiona. I have been informed by multiple sources this morning that his supporters are still attacking me online. I have no involvement with his plays and want to make

I do not engage in fantasizing or fabricating stories. However, I am receiving death threats and unwanted posts on my account from individuals who support Richard Gadd. I am taking all of these names and comments from people I am not familiar with and reporting them to the authorities and my legal team.

Harvey informed The Scottish Sun in a subsequent interview that she intends to take legal action against Netflix, alleging that she never stalked Gadd. The article also indicates that she did attend one of Gadd’s comedy shows and gifted him a pair of M&S tartan trousers.

“My complaint against Netflix is that they are billing this as a true story,”she clarified. “They have cast a plus-size actress to portray me, even though I am a highly skilled lawyer. If I were to take on the role, I would excel at it. I possess a photographic memory and am able to memorize large amounts of information. In school, I excelled in all subjects.”

“I believe individuals may be accusing me of being a mass murderer. This behavior must come to an end. I will take action against them.”

Harvey was initially introduced to Baby Reindeer during its run at the Fringe in 2019. The play’s creator had developed a character named Martha, and had specifically written her with Harvey in mind. The production was aimed at a younger audience, specifically those in their 20s who may be struggling with unemployment or a lack of direction in life. Harvey, however, did not want to be known solely as a celebrity.

The Sun subsequently published an article stating that Harvey was also accused of harassing former Glasgow MP Jimmy Wray while he was a member of the Labour Party. Laura, the wife of Jimmy Wray, alleged that Harvey harassed her after she was dismissed from the McPhail Lawrence Partnership in 1997.

Who is the real Martha from Baby Reindeer?

The true identity of Martha was not disclosed until Baby Reindeer was released on Netflix, and it has not been officially confirmed to this day.

Additionally, legal advisors have cautioned fans that any attempts to discover the identity of the person who served as inspiration for Martha could potentially result in legal consequences.

“Mark Woloshak, the head of litigation at Howells Solicitors, cautioned against identifying and possibly naming individuals involved in a case, as this could have serious legal and ethical consequences. He expressed this concern in an interview with LADbible.”

When depicting real-life events like in Baby Reindeer, it is crucial to acknowledge the sensitive line that the program creators must navigate between storytelling and real-life repercussions.

“It is important that the depiction of characters in a fictional drama does not lead to people attempting to determine the real-life counterparts of those characters. The intense interest in identifying the individuals portrayed in Baby Reindeer could potentially cause harm to innocent individuals and compromise their privacy and safety, even if they have no involvement in the events depicted.”

The Daily Record has recently published an interview with an unidentified woman who alleges that her life has been ruined by the same accusations involving Baby Reindeer.

“Despite Richard Gadd’s claims, I have been the victim in this situation. His show has resulted in death threats towards me, even though many of his claims are false.”

“Just as in the situation with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, I feel as though I am being unfairly targeted like Johnny Depp. I am the Johnny Depp in this scenario, facing attacks from irrational individuals on the internet.”

Richard Gadd

While Richard Gadd has not addressed fan allegations about the real-life Martha, he did issue a statement addressing untrue accusations surrounding Sean Foley.

In addition to fan-led investigations to locate the actual Martha, viewers of Baby Reindeer have also been exchanging thoughts on who they think could be the real-life Darrien, a character who commits sexual abuse against Donny in Episode 4.

The false accusations made against Sean Foley sparked a police investigation, prompting him to tweet: “I have informed the police and they are currently investigating all defamatory, abusive, and threatening posts directed towards me.”

Gadd responded to the situation by posting a statement on Instagram stories, clarifying: “Individuals who I highly value, have collaborated with, and respect (such as Sean Foley) are being unfairly implicated in assumptions. I urge you not to speculate on the identities of the individuals in real life. That is not the focus of our show.”

According to actress Jessica Gunning, who played Martha in the show, she echoed this sentiment in an interview with Glamour, emphasizing that she would urge people not to engage in such behavior. She believes that if this is happening, it reflects a lack of understanding of the show’s true message.

Currently, there has been no official statement addressing the speculation surrounding the real-life Martha.

Baby Reindeer: A True Story

The events depicted in Baby Reindeer are largely inspired by real experiences of Richard Gadd, including being stalked.

Gadd’s one-man play was initially inspired by his personal encounters with a stalker and was first showcased at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019. Subsequently, Netflix saw potential in the production and decided to adapt it.

According to Gadd’s interview with Radio Times, he shared that during his experience with being stalked, he saw the individual as someone who was unwell and in need of help. He recognized that stalking is a mental illness, often driven by a fantasy addiction and the belief that the person being stalked is the solution to all their problems. This can cause the stalker to only hear what they want to hear and disregard any other information.

“I had never seen that on television before, and while I was going through it, I believed it was a significant story to share. He emphasized the importance of people understanding the story.”

During a featurette released by Netflix, Gadd discloses that he received 41,000 emails, 350 hours of voicemails, numerous social media messages, and 106 pages of letters behind the scenes.
