Baby Reindeer: Martha star asks fans to stop looking for Richard Gadd’s stalker

Jessica Gunning, the actress who portrays Martha in Baby Reindeer, has spoken out against those trying to track down Richard Gadd’s real-life stalker and abuser, labeling them as “detectives.”

The plot of the Netflix series centers around Donny (played by Gadd), a barman who portrays a fictionalized version of himself. One day, he offers Martha a complimentary cup of tea, which turns out to be the first of several errors that lead to a perilous fixation and disrupts his already chaotic existence.

Despite Baby Reindeer’s immense global popularity, Gunning has made a request for fans to refrain from searching for the real-life identities of its characters, as there has been a strong interest among viewers to uncover this information.

According to her interview on BBC Scotland’s The Edit, she advises fans of the show to focus on the connection between Martha and Donny rather than trying to uncover the identities of the characters.

According to her, Richard has effectively avoided portraying the story in a simplistic and one-dimensional manner. She emphasized that there are no clear good or bad characters, no clear villains or victims, as the individuals involved are complex and relatable, just like any human being. Additionally, she highlighted that Gadd took significant measures to safeguard the identities of those involved.

Following the false accusation that Sean Foley, an actor and director who has collaborated with Gadd, was the real Darrien, the character responsible for the sexual assault of Donny, a police investigation has been launched into all defamatory, abusive, and threatening posts made against him. Foley himself tweeted about the investigation.

Gadd also urged fans to refrain from speculating about the identities of the real-life individuals, as that is not the focus of our show.

Fiona Harvey was recently accused of being Gadd’s real-life stalker, but she has refuted the accusations and has even threatened to take legal action against Netflix. Although she acknowledges that she may have served as inspiration for the character Martha, she maintains that she has a case against Netflix for marketing the show as based on a true story. She fears that viewers may wrongly perceive her as a mass murderer and insists that this must stop. She has warned that she will not hesitate to take action against them.
