Is Baby Reindeer Based on a True Story?
The Netflix show “Baby Reindeer”is based on the true story of creator Richard Gadd, who experienced sexual assault, struggled with his bisexuality, and had a stalker. In an interview with The Times, Gadd discussed a woman he encountered while working at a bar.
Despite her inability to pay for a drink, Gadd kindly made her a free cup of tea. This small gesture had unexpected consequences, as the woman began to stalk Gadd for four and a half years after that.
During an interview, Gadd stated:
“At first, everyone at the pub thought it was funny that I had an admirer. Then she started to invade my life, following me, turning up at my gigs, waiting outside my house, sending thousands of voicemails and emails.”
Gadd’s conversation with The Independent also shed light on his work. Throughout a span of three years, he was bombarded with more than 40,000 emails, a majority of which contained errors in grammar and spelling. In addition, the stalker would often attend his shows and harass him, as well as be disrespectful towards his parents. The stalker even went as far as to accuse Gadd’s father of being a pedophile to his colleagues.
Despite numerous emails filled with errors, the stalker continued to harass Gadd over the years. Not only did the stalker mock and insult Gadd, but also targeted his father at work. Despite seeking assistance from the police, Gadd felt they were not much help in the situation. To express his frustration, he resorted to using challenging vocabulary.
“I never want to lambast the police because there is a national acknowledgment at the moment that the police is an institution that needs improvement. I have met outstanding police officers in my time. And, unfortunately, I’ve met some that I feel extraordinarily let down by.“
What happened to Martha Scott?
Richard Gadd successfully obtained a restraining order against Martha, who played the honest character of Baby Reindeer.
The real “Martha”was not imprisoned for her offenses against Gadd because, as he revealed to The Times, he did not want to incarcerate someone who was suffering from severe mental illness.
During Gadd’s interview with The Guardian, which took place shortly after the Baby Reindeer stage show debuted at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2019, he revealed that the character “Martha”had eventually stopped contacting him.
Yet, the duration and date of the restraining order granted to him remain unknown.
What is the current whereabouts of Martha?
Despite public pressure, Richard Gadd has not yet disclosed the whereabouts of the honest Martha. Apart from legal barriers preventing her from coming forward and her release from jail, there is limited information on the fate of the honest “Martha.”Mr. Gadd continues to conceal her true identity.
Gadd used the pseudonym “Martha”and heavily modified her for the Netflix series “Baby Reindeer,”believing that she would not be able to recognize herself. To this day, he has kept her true identity and current whereabouts a secret.
In 2024, Gadd believes that the situation has been “resolved”and that the behavior has permanently ended. Despite still having “mixed feelings”about the situation, Gadd has a great deal of empathy for his stalker. He expressed to the Independent in 2019 that he sees her as a victim in all of this and cannot stress that enough.
Gadd later revealed to Radio Times that in Baby Reindeer, he effectively conveyed the image of a person in need of assistance and vulnerable, as he had witnessed during his encounter with the individual. This is evident through his masterful portrayal.
In the production, Richard Gadd portrays Donny Dunn, a character who develops a close relationship with an accomplished TV writer. The writer offers Donny guidance on comedy and his professional path. However, their bond takes a dangerous turn as they begin experimenting with heavy narcotics.
The writer then administers acid and GHB to Donny, followed by sexually assaulting and raping him.
Donny was able to break free after realizing how he had been manipulated. However, the impact of this trauma continued to affect him throughout his life, as he found himself dealing with a stalking situation. The series also takes a unique approach to showcasing sexuality, with Donny, like Richard Gadd, being portrayed as bisexual. It was important for the team to accurately and organically represent bisexuality through Donny’s character.
The Conclusion of Baby Reindeer
At the end of Baby Reindeer, Martha is arrested for three counts of stalking and harassment. This is a result of her leaving a threatening voicemail message, indirectly mentioning stabbing Donny and his parents. Martha pleads guilty to all three counts and is sentenced to nine months in prison.
In addition, Donny was given a five-year restraining order against Martha after their plea hearing, marking it as the final time he saw her. However, the events in Baby Reindeer differ from the actual events in Gadd’s life.
