The Disappointing Debut of MEOVV
On September 6th, THE BLACK LABEL formally launched their new girl group MEOVV. Consisting of five members, including the renowned “most beautiful child model in the world” Ella Gross, MEOVV has generated considerable buzz among K-pop enthusiasts. As the first girl group produced by Teddy, the mastermind behind YG’s successes including BLACKPINK, MEOVV is under immense pressure to deliver.
When the lineup was unveiled, MEOVV showcased several strengths with individual trailers that highlighted their stunning visuals and charisma. Ella Gross already has significant fame, while Japanese member Anna is celebrated for her exceptional looks. The third member, Sooin, has been described as a fusion of Suzy and Lisa. MEOVV also includes Gawon, noted for resembling a “mini Park Min Young,” and Narin, who exudes a luxurious rich-girl vibe. Together, they create a visually striking and sophisticated ensemble.
However, the debut MV’s first teaser left many fans underwhelmed. Together, the five members appeared surprisingly uninspired. Fans shifted their hopes to the anticipated music, which was expected to be an impressive Teddy production.
Many were hoping for a debut track that would echo the unforgettable impact of BLACKPINK’s hits like “Boombayah” or “Whistle.” While Teddy is known as a hit-maker, his creations do not always resonate with fans.
With the single “MEOW,” the musical arrangement still carries Teddy’s signature style—upbeat, catchy, and infused with hip-hop elements. However, Teddy’s involvement in this debut was limited, as he only contributed to the lyrics, while the music itself was produced by THE BLACK LABEL’s team.
After the MV was launched, feedback from viewers was mixed, focusing on the “fashionable and chic visuals,” but with music that did not quite meet expectations. When compared to the chart-topping songs Teddy crafted for BLACKPINK, “MEOW” fell short. Some fans even criticized Teddy for losing his creative edge, branding him “one-dimensional” and incapable of creating hits.
These criticisms often surface with new BLACKPINK releases, and now they have shifted towards THE BLACK LABEL’s latest offering under Teddy’s leadership.
MEOVV’s debut has left many fans feeling disheartened, and complaints have surfaced across K-pop forums. That said, it’s important to note that the song isn’t entirely without merit, as some listeners found it quite enjoyable from the first play.
The group’s debut MV achieved 6 million views within the first day, securing a respectable spot on domestic music charts for a new group. Moreover, their live performances have garnered positive reviews due to the girls’ confident stage presence.
BABYMONSTER Faces Similar Criticism
BABYMONSTER is perhaps YG’s most troubled girl group. The seven members waited almost a year since their lineup reveal, with two trainees nearing potential exclusion from the debut. When they finally debuted in November 2023, the “ace”Ahyeon was absent due to health issues.
The song “Batter Up,” featuring only six members, received little promotional effort. At that time, YG was preoccupied with BLACKPINK’s contract negotiations and G-Dragon’s contract conclusion. BABYMONSTER’s hasty debut did not help; the MV was criticized for its outdated fashion and styling, and Teddy had no involvement in the music production.
In April 2024, Ahyeon made her official return, and BABYMONSTER unveiled their first mini-album, which Yang Hyun Suk dubbed the “official debut” of all seven members. However, many K-pop fans mocked YG, suggesting that the shift in strategy was a response to their initial failure. Consequently, “Sheesh” was selected as the first promotional title track.
The song “Sheesh” sparked further controversy, as for the first time, YG’s girl group music faced apathy from Korean audiences. The title track did not appear on any digital music platforms upon release.
Things took a positive turn when BABYMONSTER showcased their skills through live performances, receiving acclaim for their vocal ability and remarkable live singing. Yet, the music continued to remain a hurdle, with the bombastic, loud arrangements typical of YG overshadowing BABYMONSTER’s musical identity.
The Fate of Two Girl Groups Debuting Under BLACKPINK’s Shadow
Teddy was not involved in producing music for BABYMONSTER, which led to criticisms. Meanwhile, MEOVV’s creation was undervalued as their debut song “MEOW” failed to embody the typical Teddy style. It seems audiences are applying double standards to these rookie girl groups, expecting both to live up to the legendary status of BLACKPINK. This has inadvertently set the eight-member group MEOVV against YG’s seven-member BABYMONSTER.
A trending discussion on K-pop forums contrasts the debut offerings of MEOVV and BABYMONSTER. Comments with high engagement consistently reveal a shared sentiment – both groups fall short of BLACKPINK’s illustrious legacy.
Korean netizens have shared their thoughts on MEOVV and BABYMONSTER:
- Both groups failed to meet my expectations. Neither group stands out; it feels like YG has exhausted their creativity, solely relying on BLACKPINK’s acclaim. The songs seem to hinge purely on BLACKPINK’s brand.
- A member of MEOVV shows great expressions and impressive rap skills, but overall the group feels quite bland.
- BABYMONSTER seems to shine more in rap and vocals; however, their dance performances are quite awkward. I was frustrated watching them but surprised by their solid live performances. MEOVV needs more time on stage to see if the girls can deliver. Neither group is necessarily bad.
- When comparing “Batter Up,” MEOVV comes out on top; “Batter Up” was truly underwhelming.
- Teddy Group has the advantage of having Teddy as the main producer, leading to high expectations, but the songwriting feels weak and disjointed.
- Both groups seem to be following BLACKPINK’s trajectory, yet they represent a later phase rather than their debut stage.
- Even if BLACKPINK were divided in two, they would still surpass these two groups.
- This is the consequence of debuting beneath BLACKPINK’s fame.
Both girl groups share the title “BLACKPINK’s little sisters,” stemming from their background in the entertainment behemoth that launched a global phenomenon. Consequently, both MEOVV and BABYMONSTER bear the heavy expectation of being successors to BLACKPINK’s legacy.
Despite the considerable advantages of debuting under BLACKPINK’s name, BABYMONSTER and MEOVV are not without challenges. The overwhelming legacy of their predecessors subjects both groups to intense scrutiny.
MEOVV and BABYMONSTER have a long road ahead to prove their worth. If the strict standards associated with BLACKPINK were not applied to evaluate the journeys of BABYMONSTER and MEOVV, perhaps the feelings of disappointment would not be as pronounced.
