Backlash from Fans Over Netflix’s Development of Pride and Prejudice TV Show

A fresh chapter in the realm of classic novel adaptations is unfolding, highlighted by a proposed Pride and Prejudice television series from Netflix. However, this announcement has stirred discontent among fans.

Many admirers of Jane Austen’s work find themselves distressed at the prospect of yet another retelling of their cherished story, especially when it is associated with this particular streaming giant.

Current reports, as highlighted by The Daily Mail, indicate that the series is in the works, aiming to build on the impressive legacy of Austen’s exploration of romance amidst social strife and surprising connections.

This new adaptation seeks to follow in the footsteps of the iconic 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, as well as the celebrated 1995 BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle—most famously known for the unforgettable scene with Firth’s Mr. Darcy emerging from the water.

Reports suggest that British author Dolly Alderton (recognizable for Everything I Know About Love) is responsible for writing the scripts. Even though the series has not yet been officially greenlit, speculation surrounding casting has indicated that Daisy Edgar-Jones may portray Elizabeth Bennet.

Much like Austen’s other literary works, Pride and Prejudice has established itself as a pop culture cornerstone, even making an appearance in the 2023 Barbie film. Thus, it’s no surprise that fans have reacted strongly—largely with negativity.

On X, some cynical remarks include: “It’ll be canceled before we see Mr. Darcy,” and another stating, “Undevelop it.”

This skepticism largely stems from Netflix’s 2022 version of Austen’s Persuasion, featuring Dakota Johnson, which faced significant backlash for its discordant tone and contemporary adaptation. Its Rotten Tomatoes rating stands at a mere 30%.

“I don’t trust this after what they did to Persuasion,” a user commented, capturing the attitude of many.

The sentiment on Reddit mirrors this, with comments such as: “Given what they did to Persuasion? Keep it. I dislike when adaptations of beloved novels flounder, as it only delays the chance of a quality retelling.”

This news emerges shortly after the casting reveal for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, which has drawn mixed responses, including accusations of whitewashing the character of Heathcliff.

If Netflix receives the go-ahead for their adaptation, it won’t stand alone in the Pride and Prejudice universe. Recently, the BBC announced a return to its classic storytelling with a spinoff titled The Other Bennet Sister, which will delve into the life of the often-overlooked Mary Bennet.
