On March 31, 2024, the official YouTube channel of animation studio TMS Entertainment released an announcement video for the Baki Hanma sequel, Baki-Dou. Baki is an ongoing manga series by Itagaki Keisuke, and TMS Entertainment is responsible for animating both the original series and its sequel.
The initial installment of Baki debuted in June 2018, with its sequel The Great Raitai Tournament Saga premiering in June 2020. Following this, the Baki Hanma series began, with its first season airing in September 2021 and its second in June 2023. The newly announced Baki Hanma sequel will continue the story from season 2 and adapt the fourth series of Baki.
Exciting News for Baki Fans: Baki-Dou Sequel Announced!
The Baki Hanma sequel’s announcement trailer provided a glimpse into the plot of the upcoming anime. The trailer opens inside a laboratory, with a team of scientists gathered around a mysterious vessel.
After the scientist gave a signal, the contents of the vessel emerged and it was revealed to be a human. The video then revealed the announcement of the Baki Hanma sequel with a visual of Baki and ended with a character visual of Musashi Miyamoto, an ancient Japanese philosopher.
Keisuke Itagaki’s Baki is widely regarded as his most impactful work. The manga was first published in 1991 as Grappler Baki and concluded in 1999. Itagaki then continued the series with Baki: New Grappler Series, which ran from 1999 to 2005 and spanned 31 volumes.
The third series, Baki Hanma, began serialization in December 2005 and concluded in August 2012 with a total of 37 volumes. In March 2014, the fourth series, Baki-dou, began serialization and ended in April 2018 after 22 volumes. The fifth series, a continuation of the previous series, started in October 2018 and finished its serialization in June 2023 with a total of 17 volumes.
The fourth series of Baki, entitled Baki Hanma, will be adapted as the sequel to the sixth and latest series Baki Rahen, which began its publication in August 2023.
The upcoming season of Baki will once again be brought to life by TMS Entertainment, the animation studio responsible for all previous seasons since 2018. Baki was previously adapted into an anime by Group TAC, which unfortunately declared bankruptcy in September 2010.
