Baldur’s Gate 3 Bug Turns Character Portraits Into Webcam Videos

Despite being a year since its release, Baldur’s Gate 3 still has some persistent glitches that players may encounter. One of these glitches can cause character portraits to appear distorted, resembling poorly-aligned Zoom calls.

The inclusion of character portraits in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a nod to the previous games. They serve not only as a convenient way to choose characters, but also provide a visual representation of their current hit points. Additionally, the portraits update to reflect changes in the party member’s appearance, allowing for detailed views of their headgear.

Regrettably, the glitches that have plagued Baldur’s Gate 3 since its release also affect the character portraits. According to users on the Baldur’s Gate 3 Reddit, there is a problem where the close-ups of party members appear as if they were being viewed through a webcam.

One user joked about the infamous boomer camera tilt and the messed up face-to-ceiling ratio, while another mentioned that it had been happening since EA and they had hoped it would be fixed before release, but it wasn’t a major issue.

As reported by a user, the source of the problem has been determined and a potential fix is now accessible: “Regrettably, a familiar glitch tends to occur when leveling up. You could attempt to reset your skills at Withers to trigger a level up (or level up in the usual manner), and if that does not work, try reloading a saved file from before the glitch appeared.”

Despite being a common occurrence for certain races, this glitch has an even greater disadvantage. As one user stated, “Although it happens frequently to me and my friends, I have no explanation for it. It’s especially amusing when it affects shorter races like dwarves or halflings, as they completely vanish from the box, leaving it empty.”

Despite being publicly addressed for a considerable amount of time, it is surprising that this problem has persisted since Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in early access and remains unresolved.

Although the glitch does not impact gameplay, it can actually be quite entertaining when it happens. As a result, it may not be a top priority to fix, especially since there are still many plans in store for the game.
