Baldur’s Gate 3’s one-year anniversary is approaching on August 3, and fans are continuing to flock to the game in large numbers, even after its year-long release.
In 2020, those intrigued by the world of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Forgotten Realms were given the opportunity to do so through the game’s early access release on PC. This initial version only included Act I, causing many to opt for waiting until the full launch in 2023. Console players were also able to join in at a later date.
Despite many game developers and publishers not publicly disclosing their active player numbers, Steam charts provide some insight. It is no surprise that the majority of the top 10 games with the highest active player numbers are multiplayer titles, such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Apex Legends. However, Elden Ring stands out as the main exception in this list.
Despite being primarily a single-player narrative game, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to generate high monthly numbers on Steam. A thread on the game’s Reddit was created to acknowledge its average of 100,000 monthly players, a testament to its enduring appeal.

Baldur’s Gate 3 players aren’t done exploring every facet of the game
One user wrote that it is incredible to see the impact of a team’s passion for a game. They acknowledged that this sentiment has been expressed before, but stated that BG3 is truly a game of its generation. Such exceptional games are few and far between.
After a year of dedicated use, one user expressed their excitement about reaching 750 hours and nearing the completion of Act 3. Another user praised the creators of BG3 for their passion for DnD, in contrast to live service games produced by profit-driven companies.
A user accurately captured the impact of pouring one’s heart and soul into creating a game, saying “The ‘consequences’ of this effort are truly eye-opening. Take note, AAA games.”
It is even more astonishing that the game is reaching its conclusion. Most studios would be focused on creating paid DLC at this point, but Larian has decided to move on from Baldur’s Gate 3 and instead provide players with modding tools to create their own content.
The game’s sheer replayability is a major contributor to Baldur’s Gate 3’s high player count. It is the type of experience that encourages players to embark on multiple playthroughs and experiment with different builds. As a result, it is unlikely that the fanbase will diminish anytime soon.
