Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer Criticizes Scalpers Selling Collector’s Edition for Over $2,000

Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer Criticizes Scalpers Selling Collector’s Edition for Over $2,000

The Collector’s Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been spotted on reseller markets with prices exceeding $2,000, prompting a strong reaction from Larian’s Director of Publishing, Michael Douse.

As part of various available editions, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers an enticing Collector’s Edition for avid fans eager to acquire both the game and a variety of exclusive physical merchandise. Unfortunately, this edition has been out of stock for some time, leaving resellers as the primary source for potential buyers.

When first launched in 2023, the Collector’s Edition was priced at $269.99. However, due to the actions of scalpers, the current resale price has soared to over $2,000. Douse voiced his concerns about this troubling trend in a tweet on X.

“I’m really irritated by scalpers,” he stated. “I get the concept of commodities, but this [Collector’s Edition] is not just an item; it’s meant to bring joy, not to make anyone wealthy. When you purchase it just to resell, you’re only bringing disappointment to someone looking to enjoy it.”

The steep rise in the price of this special edition is indeed disheartening. However, fans who are eager to acquire the game and related merchandise still have options.

Larian has introduced a Deluxe Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3. While it may lack the Mindflayer statue, physical artbook, and D20 metal dice that come with the Collector’s Edition, it does offer some comparable features.

Buyers will still receive a map and stickers along with the game and add-ons, and it’s priced at a more accessible $99.99 without concerns of stock shortages. However, the presence of scalpers has also been noted in relation to this edition.

Fortunately, the developers at Larian have reassured fans that the Deluxe Edition will remain readily available.
