Larian Studios CEO and director of Baldur’s Gate 3, Swen Vincke, described the upcoming Patch 7 as a transition to the players, as it will introduce official modding tools. This suggests that it will be the last major content update for the game.
On June 14, 2024, during An Evening with Baldur’s Gate 3, a masterclass hosted by the BAFTAs, Vincke shared insights on the update and Larian’s upcoming plans.
According to Eurogamer, the director is eagerly anticipating the implementation of official mod support, stating that “One of our main goals is to allow players to create their own mods for Baldur’s Gate 3, as it will give them the opportunity to create unique content.”
Vincke then discussed the highly anticipated release of Patch 7, set for September 2024. He expressed that this would be the moment when players would have full ownership of the game, as they would be able to create and contribute their own content.
Although Larian has no immediate plans to discontinue support for Baldur’s Gate 3, Vincke suggests that players should not anticipate any major content updates in the near future.
Even though the developers are still putting in the same amount of effort as if the game had just been released, Vincke states that the level of support will decrease to only addressing critical bug fixes once Patch 7 is released.
Baldur’s Gate 3 mods have been available since the game’s launch and offer a wide range of additions, such as increasing the level cap and party size, as well as restoring removed content. Interestingly, some mods even give Astarion access to firearms.
Despite this, Larian’s official tools will greatly simplify the process of creating and sharing mods. While the update does not allow fans to create new story content, it does enable console players to utilize mods for the first time.
Despite the disappointment it may bring to some players, it should come as no surprise that Larian has confirmed they will not be creating any DLC or a fourth installment for Baldur’s Gate 3.
Instead of working on Baldur’s Gate 3, the studio is focused on developing two highly ambitious RPGs, with at least one being hinted at within the game.
Currently, Larian is still devoted to developing Patch 7 and its accompanying modding tools, as Vincke explains that it has been a challenging process.
