Baldur’s Gate 3 MTG sets sell out as Wizards refuse to change Secret Lair model

Unfortunately for Baldur’s Gate 3 enthusiasts, those hoping to show their love for the RPG in Magic: The Gathering are out of luck. The Secret Lairs featuring the game’s companions were quickly sold out.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, Wizards of the Coast’s D&D and MTG branches are collaborating by releasing five distinct Secret Lair sets.

Various Secret Lairs center around iconic aspects of D&D, showcasing timeless artwork and honoring the infamous Beholder creatures.

Despite this, the main appeal of these Secret Lairs for numerous fans is the attention being directed towards Baldur’s Gate 3. Even after more than a year since its debut, BG3 continues to hold its position as one of the most exceptional RPGs ever created and a standout in the world of modern D&D.

It’s not unexpected, therefore, that the Secret Lairs featuring popular BG3 companions Karlach and Astarion were quickly sold out within hours of their release, while other sets in the D&D 50th anniversary superdrop are still available for purchase.

Despite having a passing interest in Magic, BG3 fans will be disappointed as the warning signs of this set selling out were evident as soon as it was announced. The shift to a limited-run model for Secret Lair in 2024 has resulted in numerous issues.

Despite not selling out as rapidly as the Monty Python Secret Lair, the Astarion and Karlach sets continue the concerning trend that started with the Secret Lair Commander Deck: Raining Cats and Dogs. Although their sales were not record-breaking, this pattern is disheartening and has been ongoing since the release of the Raining Cats and Dogs deck.

Despite the Magic fanbase being vocal about their unhappiness with the alteration to the Secret Lair, those who were hoping for Wizards and Hasbro to reverse their decision will be disappointed.

As announced in the 50th Anniversary Secret Lair announcement, Wizards revealed their plans to eliminate the “timer”on Secret Lair sales events, effectively removing hard ending dates. Although this change may lessen the fear of missing out, it is unlikely to prevent highly-anticipated Secret Lairs from selling out quickly.

Despite the fact that the new limited print model will remain the same, this admission may be difficult for many fans to accept. Currently, the only way to ensure your ability to obtain a Secret Lair is by being extremely attentive and prepared on the day of its release.
