Baldur’s Gate 3 player devastated after failing Honor Mode during epilogue

A player was close to finishing Baldur’s Gate 3 in Honor Mode but failed during the epilogue party. His defeat marked an abrupt end to his adventure.

The biggest challenge in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Honor Mode, a punishing maximum difficulty level. This is because players must complete the game with a single save file and lose all progress if their party is defeated.

Since the mode launched as part of Patch 5, many stories of people succeeding or failing have been shared. Some came close to making it before losing to the final boss, while others succeeded in more questionable ways.

However, one player could be the first to fail Honor Mode after beating the final boss, during another popular Patch 5 addition: Blight’s Epilogue Party.

Baldur’s Gate 3 player loses in Honor Mode after beating the final boss

As shared by Reddit user kittykalista, his Honor Mode playthrough ended after defeating the final boss: the Brain.

Before the final battle, the player chose to sacrifice Gayle and let their character transform into a Mind Flayer. Everything seemed to go smoothly throughout the battle and the feast, until the very end: “As I finish talking to the last companion, the narrator says how hungry I am.”

At this point, the player had to make dice rolls to “resist the urge to eat my companion’s brain”, which he failed. Thinking they were safe during the epilogue, the players did not attempt to revive with inspiration.

This turned out to be a mistake, as the entire camp became aggressive following the attempt to eat the brain. The player thought that Wither would intervene like he does if the player killed someone during his party, but he did nothing, allowing the party to kill the player.

After reloading the file and scrolling through the credits, the player only received the Ceremorph achievement for transforming into a Mind Flayer, meaning they will have to try again to obtain the coveted Foe Hammer and the golden dice.

We can therefore say that this is, as the user said, “the worst possible way to lose an Honor game” . If there’s a lesson to be learned from this, it’s that you can never let your guard down in Honor Mode, even if you’ve reached the epilogue of Baldur’s Gate 3.
