The RPG systems featured in Baldur’s Gate 3 are incredibly detailed and have impressed players with their depth. The romance options, in particular, are a standout feature. In fact, some players have even expressed that it has raised their expectations for romances in other games.
On Reddit, a player expressed their opinion that Larian Studios has negatively impacted their experience with romances in other games. The post gained widespread attention for addressing the presence of unnecessary flirt choices and the absence of NPC autonomy.
Larian ruined romances in other games for me. byu/Pitiful_Crab_2332 inBaldursGate3
The majority of reactions to the post expressed strong agreement. A player specifically stated, “I completely agree. Many posts on here involve players complaining about the companions making advances towards them, but it’s important to recognize that the companions have their own agency and valid reasons for being attracted to you.”
One person also discussed the thorough processes that Larian followed during the production of motion capture scenes. They mentioned, “I’m not sure how common this is in the industry, but Larian employed intimacy coordinators. This attention to detail is evident in the voice acting and facial expressions during intimate scenes.”
Although I have only personally experienced romancing Karlach, I have also witnessed other character romance cutscenes through videos and co-op. The animation and acting teams have truly outdone themselves in selling the emotions and depth of these scenes. It is easy to get lost in their exceptional work.
Some people believed that the OP’s statement was a bit extreme, with one person commenting, “I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s ruined, but I do find the ‘Flirt button’ options a bit cringeworthy.”
“You are correct in saying that they are frequently ill-timed and portrayed in an exaggerated and obvious manner (sometimes to the point of being unsettling), due to the numerous complaints about accidentally initiating romances before this became a prevalent trend.”
Despite personal opinions on the romance systems in Baldur’s Gate 3, it remains one of the most extensive in the genre at present.
