It is widely known that certain companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 were given a more extensive storyline than others, resulting in criticism from players regarding Larian’s favoritism. Recently, fans have also been expressing disappointment with the game’s neglect of companion clothing.
Simply by examining the companion clothing in Baldur’s Gate 3, it would be easy to identify their owners. Astarion’s iconic attire and Karlach’s fiery chest armor are memorable and distinctive.
When comparing the appearance of Wyll and Gale to the traditional attire of a Warlock and Wizard, it becomes apparent how simplistic they truly are. In fact, they are indistinguishable from the default clothing for those classes.
Upon noticing this, a player visited the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit and criticized Larian for neglecting the companions.
The poster shared, “Why aren’t they given distinctive attire? Is Larian incapable?”They also attached an image with the caption: “Wyll and Gale’s reaction to seeing everyone with individualized outfits, while they are stuck with the standard gear for their class.”

It was noted by other players that Gale’s clothing differed from the standard Wizard, with his robes being purple while player wizards typically start out with green robes. However, it was also pointed out that Wyll’s attire was the default option.
As previously noted, there is a common joke among players about the amount of attention received by Shadowheart and Astarion in their companion storylines, often in comparison to the seemingly lesser focus on Gale and Wyll’s stories throughout all three acts.
Therefore, by incorporating mundane clothing and a lack of enthusiasm for their distinct style, it appears that Larian may be unintentionally intensifying the favoritism controversy.
Some other players shared the same sentiment, jokingly mentioning “Larian has favorites, right? Haha, just kidding, but we all know Gale is one of them. The colors of Gale’s robe are so beautiful, it’s hard not to consider it a favorite.”
Despite some criticism towards Larian for showing favoritism, others found humor in the lack of good clothing options. One person quipped, “Or perhaps we should consider that all the other wizards and warlocks are simply imitating THEM?”Another joked, “Gale may have had some stylish enchanted robes, but he ended up devouring them.”
In the end, clothing is not a game-changer. The companions can also acquire better armor as the game progresses, which only fuels the favoritism jests and suggests that some companions may have received preferential treatment or that Gale and Wyll simply aren’t concerned with fashion.
