One year has passed since the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, yet players are still processing a major story reveal involving one of the game’s customizable characters. The game is now commemorating its first anniversary.
Those who have progressed to the latter parts of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be familiar with the fact that the Guardian is not who they initially present themselves to be. When starting a new game, players have the option to personalize this character to their preferences, but this enigmatic individual holds numerous sinister truths that can leave players feeling deceived.
Despite being released a year ago, the Baldur’s Gate 3 community is still abuzz with discussions about the major plot twist of the player’s Guardian being revealed as the mind flayer Emperor.
A meme that was shared on the BaldursGate3 subreddit effectively captures the shock that many players experienced. It points out the frustration of spending a lot of time creating the perfect Guardian, only to find out later on that their initial appearance was deceptive.

The top comment on the post humorously describes the varying approaches players take when designing their Guardians after learning the truth. It states that players often envision their first Guardian as their ideal romantic partner or a wise mentor, but their subsequent Guardians are chosen randomly until they find one that makes them burst into uncontrollable laughter.
Another person revealed, “I ensure to cover the screen before clicking on random, so that their appearance is a pleasant surprise.”
Some also commended developer Larian Studios for successfully surprising players by creating an emotional attachment to their Guardian, only to then shatter their hearts.
As someone once expressed, “I invested a lot of thought into my initial guardian,”including them in their Tav’s background. “But then act 3 arrived. Curse you, Larian, and your incredible storytelling.”
Despite the shocking Guardian twist, not everyone was left heartbroken. According to Larian’s stats for Baldur’s Gate 3’s anniversary, over a million players still chose to romance the Emperor, with 37% of them even sleeping with him in his mind flayer form – despite the option to have him maintain his original Guardian appearance.
