Baldur’s Gate 3’s Minsc Pokes Fun at Tav’s Name with This One Trick

Tav is a frequently used name for characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, but this does not make it exempt from Minsc’s playful teasing, especially if you employ this particular tactic.

Baldur’s Gate 3 players are known for their creativity in designing characters, builds, and making choices. However, this creativity often falls short when it comes to naming their carefully crafted design after spending hours on it, resulting in many players defaulting to the name Tav.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with choosing Tav, just be prepared for some gentle ribbing from the beloved hamster-obsessed adventurer, Minsc.

If you decide to accept Raphael’s offer, Minsc will immediately criticize your choice and warn you that by accepting the deal, Raphael will have control over you through your name.

The upcoming scene is quite comical as Minsc insists that you have given a false name, teasing Shadowheart, and eventually bringing up Tav’s name, only to dismiss it as “something foolish”like Tav. As soon as he suggests it, both Boo and Minsc declare that it cannot possibly be Tav because “that is a ridiculous, ridiculous name.”

Despite the fact that Shadowheart’s real name is not known, she is often the target of ridicule for her name.

Nevertheless, Minsc is the one that Tav truly captures the attention of, highlighting Larian’s willingness to mock not only their own name concept but also the tendency of many Baldur’s Gate 3 players to choose the most basic name possible, despite devoting significant time to customizing their characters’ appearance and abilities.

Interestingly, Tav is not a shortened version of Tavern, but rather an original and creative name. It pays tribute to Larian’s CEO, Swen Vinckle’s beloved dog Gustav, as revealed in a tweet (https://x.com/laratlarian/status/1048252080509648898). Sadly, Gustav had already passed away before the game’s release, so Larian chose to honor him by naming the default character Tav.

If Minsc were aware of the background of that name, it is highly improbable that the companion would mock the character’s decisions.
