Baldur’s Gate 3’s Owlbear: A Hidden Mechanic Fans May Have Missed

Even nearly a year after its full release, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to surprise players with deadly discoveries that have yet to be uncovered.

A delightful surprise awaits in Act One with the introduction of the lovable yet incredibly strong Owlbear. Although players may become attached to the Owlbear cub over the course of the game, they must defeat its mother in order to ‘adopt’ this unique pet.

Despite the challenges, confronting the mother can result in an unexpected outcome, as shared by a player on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/1efwpns/the_owlbear_mother_can_what/.”

The poster shared, “I had no idea that the Owlbear mom could summon her mate. And now, another Owlbear has appeared.”This highlights the hazards of facing an Owlbear in combat.

Typically, the sole adversary you must confront is the Owlbear mother, a formidable battle even for lower-level characters, let alone with the addition of another opponent.

Fortunately, players need not be overly concerned, since the second Owlbear will only spawn in Honour Mode, thereby intensifying the challenge.

According to one user, “That’s her ‘Legendary Action,’ which is exclusive to Honor mode.”Another user chimed in, stating that “Honor mode introduces new mechanics for all the bosses.”This suggests that the Owlbear is not the only formidable foe players will encounter in this highly sought-after game mode.

Some expressed their surprise at encountering the same enemy, stating, “It was unexpected and it ruined my second honor run. I was enjoying myself and was caught off guard when the mate suddenly fell.”

One person added, “I was unaware that she did this. Her companion appeared out of nowhere behind my Tiefling sorcerer, who I had flown up to a supposedly ‘safe’ distance. This resulted in us needing to use the ogre horn earlier than intended. Sadly, the ogres slaughtered the Baby Owlbear… and to make matters worse, I accidentally consumed the egg that we were planning to sell. It was a chaotic and ultimately fruitless encounter.”

Curiously, a different player revealed a valuable strategy for handling the unexpected obstacle: “Utilize the silence technique on shadow heart! This allowed me to catch her off guard and stop her from summoning her partner.”

If the mother Owlbear is unable to make any noise, she will not be able to call for her mate, resulting in the battle being as straightforward as it is in the regular game modes. Nevertheless, if you are seeking a greater challenge, Honour Mode has a multitude of options available.
