Baldur’s Gate 3’s Top Low-Level Spell May Surprise You

Despite the amazing low-level spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, there is one with a misleading description of its effects that may lead players to believe it is better than it actually is.

The Command spell is widely considered the most powerful level one spell in Baldur’s Gate 3. Despite containing five distinct effects within one spell, one in particular stands out: Command: Drop.

The spell Command can be used to compel an enemy to make a Wisdom Saving Throw. If the enemy fails, they will be forced to release the weapon they are wielding. This spell is crucial for obtaining the Everburn Blade in the tutorial, as the alternative would be a highly challenging boss battle.

According to fans online, the issue lies in the fact that the in-game description of Command: Drop in the Spellbook does not accurately reflect its actual effect. The description claims to allow the user to command a creature to drop its weapon and take no other actions on its turn.

The effect of Command: Drop is that it compels the enemy to release their weapon during your turn, rather than theirs. However, it does not hinder their ability to take Actions on their own turn.

Therefore, the enemy will use their Action to retrieve their weapon on their turn, but this does not necessarily mean they will not switch to another weapon or approach you and strike with an Unarmed Attack.

Despite this, Command: Drop remains an incredible spell when facing armed adversaries. Though spells such as Tasha’s Hideous Laughter can also hinder opponents from acting, it grants them additional opportunities to resist whenever they are harmed.

In the meantime, utilizing Command: Drop will either compel the enemy to waste their turn retrieving and equipping their weapon or limit their attack to a weaker one. This is due to the fact that unarmed combat is significantly less effective for any humanoid without levels in the Monk class in Baldur’s Gate 3.

It is unexpected that the Command: Drop feature has remained unchanged since Baldur’s Gate 3 released nearly a year ago, but hopefully it will be revised before Larian Studios completes the game.
