Bang Si Hyuk Reflects on His Role in K-Pop’s Global Ascent
On December 23, the Asia Society published a concise interview featuring the influential figure Bang Si Hyuk, where he discussed his unexpected journey in propelling K-pop and Korean culture to international prominence.
Unexpected Success in the Global Arena
Bang candidly confessed, “Honestly, I never imagined this kind of success. When I was young, the global market, particularly the U.S. market, felt so distant. The icons of that time seemed like heroes from another world, unattainable. Reflecting on my journey with BTS, I never anticipated we would reach the heights we have today.”
A Team Effort: BTS’s Impact on Korean Culture
Bang attributes much of this monumental success to BTS and their unwavering commitment to achieving significant milestones for Asian artists. “About two and a half years after BTS debuted, it dawned on me that we could achieve unprecedented things in Asia. Encouraging the members and myself to chase our dreams has proven fruitful, and looking back, the experience feels surreal,” he added.
Challenging Stereotypes Through Music
He emphasized the transformative effects of BTS on the perception of Asian culture: “Before BTS exploded onto the global scene, the understanding of Asian culture was narrow and limited. Thanks to BTS and our hard work, we have made headway into global markets, allowing people to appreciate our culture in its true essence.”
Mixed Reactions from Fans and Critics
Following Bang’s remarks, reactions have been mixed. Some Korean netizens expressed skepticism, with comments such as, “He only got there because of luck,” and “Come back to Korea and face the music.” Others mentioned concerns over the integrity of wealth generated within K-pop.
Conversely, international fans took to social media to express gratitude for Bang’s recognition of BTS’s contributions. Comments like, “I appreciate how he acknowledged that BTS was integral to this success; it’s truly a team effort,” and “For giving BTS a start, I will always respect you for that,” reflect the positive sentiment surrounding the group’s impact.
