Beetlejuice 2 Breaks Box Office Record Previously Held by Stephen King

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has successfully risen from the dead, achieving significant milestones at the box office.

The Tim Burton sequel was released on September 6, featuring Michael Keaton alongside some fresh talent. Since its premiere, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has proven to be a blockbuster hit, raking in $110 million during its opening weekend against a production budget of $100 million.

Furthermore, that figure only accounts for domestic earnings – globally, the horror sequel has accumulated $145 million. The impressive ticket sales have enabled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to become the second-highest grossing September debut in history.

This achievement surpassed another legendary horror franchise, Stephen King’s IT: Chapter 2, which debuted in 2019 with a $91 million opening.

But who holds the top September spot? IT: Chapter 1 still reigns supreme with an impressive $123 million during its opening weekend in domestic theaters.

Arriving 36 years after the original Beetlejuice launched in 1988, the blend of strong word of mouth and nostalgic appeal has clearly propelled the sequel to the forefront of September’s box office.

In our Beetlejuice Beetlejuice review, we awarded the film four stars, noting: “The result is a fantasy world that feels tangible despite its stunning graphics, featuring beautifully crafted ghouls and ghosts traversing the narrow paths of an absurd, immersive underworld that portrays death as more enjoyable than one might expect.”
