Blood Hunt #1
Credit for the creation of this work goes to Jed McKay, Pepe Larraz, and Marte Gracia.
About the story: BLOOD HUNT #1 is the bloodiest Marvel event to date. As the sky turns dark and the sun hides, the vampires, known as the children of the night, have emerged from their hidden places to unleash carnage upon the world. Can the heroes of this doomed universe, including the AVENGERS, BLADE, BLOODLINE, SPIDER-MAN, HUNTER’S MOON, TIGRA, DOCTOR STRANGE, and CLEA, prevent the impending bloodbath and save Earth from its final night? Join them as the deadly dance begins in BLOOD HUNT #1!
My initial thoughts: To be honest, I was skeptical about Blood Hunt at first. Vampires and Marvel superheroes have been a common theme for as long as I can remember, and although there have been some standout stories (I have a soft spot for Curse of the Mutants), it’s not a combination that I typically think highly of. However, it seems that my concerns may have been unwarranted. The early buzz surrounding Blood Hunt is extremely positive, and it appears that the event will be on a grand scale. Could this be the event that solidifies Marvel’s dominance this summer?
The Flash (2024) Annual #1
Written by Si Spurrier and illustrated by Tom Derenick, Scott Koblish, George Kambadais, Amancay Nahuelpan, Lee Loughridge, Matt Herms, Marissa Louise, and featuring lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Mike Deodato Jr., and Jão Canola
The Flash Annual sees Wally West trapped in the Speed Force.
About the plot: The Flash family is in need of assistance, and Barry Allen is their only hope. With Wally West missing, Central City is facing numerous strange threats, but luckily, Wallace West, Avery Ho, and Circuit Breaker are there to lend a hand. However, Barry is currently dealing with his own personal crisis, so can he be counted on to help his family in their time of need?
Our thoughts: The current arc of The Flash is in a dire state. Wally is trapped in Limbo, Barry is experiencing a severe mental breakdown due to the Rogues’ actions, and Linda is struggling to hold herself and her family together. It may seem gloomy, but I can’t deny that I’m eagerly anticipating how everything will unfold. The Annual issue is expected to have a significant impact on the ongoing Flash storyline, so it’s definitely not one to be missed.
X-Men #34
This work is credited to Gerry Duggan, Joshua Cassara, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Marte Gracia.
Xavier’s betrayal rocks the Krakoa people in X-Men #34.
About the story: The end is near! The era of Krakoa is coming to a close and the heroes must prepare for what could be their final battle. Before the fall and rise reach their conclusion, they make one last stop that will bring about major changes.
Our Opinion: The X-Men have finally come back together, although at a tragic price. Xavier’s betrayal of his own kind and their dream has caused fractures that will likely play a major role in the upcoming relaunch in July. It’s unfortunate that many significant plot details, such as the return of key characters or Jean’s resurrection as the Phoenix, have been revealed through the promotion for the From the Ashes reboot. However, there is still one pressing question on the minds of readers: What will ultimately happen to Xavier and Krakoa?
Nightwing (2024) Annual #1
Authored by Travis Moore, Ivan Plascencia, Alex Guimarães, and Tamra Bonvillain.
Nightwing takes a supporting role for 2024 Annual #1, whihc focuses on his ex-girlfriend and pirate queen, Bea.
About: UNCOVER THE MYSTERIOUS BEGINNINGS OF THE PIRATE QUEEN! Delve into the unknown origins of Bea Bennett, the enigmatic pirate queen. In a recent pirate escapade with Nightwing, it was revealed that Bea was not just Dick/Ric’s former flame, but also the daughter of the Quartermaster, ruler of an entire pirate society. However, her past before becoming a pirate and meeting Ric Grayson remains shrouded in mystery. Discover the untold story of her journey, filled with deceit, romance, and self-discovery.
Our opinion: During the Ric Grayson era of Nightwing, Bea was one of the most neglected characters. Despite fans’ dislike for Ric, many were fond of Bea and were disappointed to see her disregarded. However, the current run has rectified this by making her a pirate queen. Though it may seem unconventional, her backstory is finally revealed in this issue, and who doesn’t enjoy a thrilling pirate tale?
Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #1
Authored by Joe Kelly, Adam Kubert, and Frank Martin
It’s a synergy slasher fest as Deadpool and Wolverine try to avert a world war.
Summary: Wade Wilson and Logan, two iconic characters from comics and pop culture, find themselves in a tense and unexpected team-up. Their conflicting personalities and abilities will be put to the test as they embark on a worldwide adventure in a three-part saga. The mysterious figure known as DELTA has plans for change, but as they target Deadpool and Wolverine gets involved, will this be a positive transformation or a disaster? Brace yourself for the explosive WWIII as renowned writers Joe Kelly and Adam Kubert bring this wild duo to life in their respective series, DEADPOOL and WOLVERINE.
Our thoughts:With the hype surrounding Deadpool and Wolverine, a brand new crossover between the two has been released in the world of comics. This is a great opportunity to see these two characters come together, especially since they have had limited interactions in previous comic issues. Whether you’re a fan of these characters or simply enjoy a classic, ’90s-style, hyper-violent showdown, this comic is a must-read before the release of the upcoming movie.
Space Ghost #1
Authored by David Pepose, Jonathan Lau, Taylor Esposito, and Francesco Mattina
1960s icon Space Ghost is back for a new, modern take.
The theme of the story centers around greed and corruption, which thrive in the darkness of the space between stars. As the Galactic Federation’s territories span across the vast expanse of space, distant colonies are raided by pirates and hijackers, who show no mercy to the innocent scientists residing within them.
However, there exists a cosmic vigilante who dispenses justice across the galaxy, seeking retribution for those who harm the vulnerable.
There are those who believe he is a renegade police officer who has disregarded the rules of the law. Others describe him as a ghostly figure, the only remaining inhabitant of a planet ravaged by war. And those who have witnessed his destructive power attest to him being a formidable force of nature, capable of manipulating the elements of the universe to obliterate his foes. He is known as SPACE GHOST – and his epic journeys commence right here.
The thrilling series begins as acclaimed writer DAVID PEPOSE (Punisher) and renowned artist JONATHAN LAU (Vampirella Strikes) launch a surprise assault on Space Colony Omicron, the residence of brilliant scientist Dr. Jerrod Keplar and his children Jan and Jace, along with their pet monkey, Blip. Despite the colony’s defenses being overrun, hope is not lost as the unpredictable Space Ghost arrives to turn the tide against the ruthless pirates.
I am truly amazed by this second gritty Space Ghost reboot of my lifetime. Fans who have followed the franchise for a long time may recall the 2005 reboot of the character, which received critical acclaim for its transformation of a campy 1960s cartoon character into a fully-developed, contemporary hero.
Despite what some may believe, Space Ghost possesses immense potential as a powerful cosmic entity, and with the right creative team, they will have a wide range of possibilities to explore. Pepose’s previous work on Punisher has shown his ability to revamp established characters, and Lau’s exceptional contributions to Dynamite’s Green Hornet and 007 series only add to my anticipation for this Space Ghost reboot.
