The Norse Pantheon is a formidable choice in Age of Mythology Retold for those seeking victory. However, to fully harness their advantages and emerge triumphant, it is crucial to adhere to the optimal build order.
To progress efficiently through each age in Retold, it is crucial to have the most optimal build order. Unlike Age of Empires, the construction orders in AoM vary for all four Pantheons, particularly in the initial ages.
The Norse possess formidable strength thanks to their ability to quickly mobilize Ox Carts, flexible infantry, swift Favor generation, powerful Myth units, and effective God Powers and Siege units. This, combined with their aggressive approach, makes them an incredibly enjoyable and formidable option.
The most optimal build order for the Norse Pantheon involves specific goals for each age, as well as a recommended order for creating villagers, military units, and buildings as you progress through each age.
Archaic Age
Our objective is to develop a robust economy and swiftly advance to the Classical Age.
Transitioning through the Archaic Age correctly is pivotal to your success.
As Norse has the advantage of Dwarfs for faster Gold production compared to standard villagers, you can focus less on prioritizing Gold than the other three Pantheons. However, as always, Food remains the top priority in the most critical age. By following the steps outlined below, you can smoothly transition to the next age.
The most effective Norse build order for the Archaic Age is as follows:
- Send 3 starting villagers and Ox Cart to collect food.
- Note: If using Thor, you will start with 3 Dwarfs instead. Put 2 on Food, and 1 on Gold.
- Have Dwarf mine Gold.
- Construct a dwelling.
- To construct the Ox Cart, place it next to the Gold Mine.
- Instruct a Dwarf to extract Gold through mining.
- Instruct 2 villagers to gather Wood.
- Construct an Ox cart beside the Wood source.
- Order 2 villagers to collect Food.
- Note: If using Thor, Move the 2 starter Dwarfs from collecting Food to mine Gold.
- Direct one villager to gather Wood.
- Command 2 villagers to gather Food.
- Direct the Dwarf to extract Gold from the mine.
- Once you have ordered your 3 Dwarfs, it should be time to build the temple.
- Progress to the Classical Age.
Classical Age
Objective: Initiate military manufacturing and sustain economic progress.
The Classical Age marks the start of your army and builds on your efficient economic foundations.
After the Archaic Age, you will have 7 villagers working on gathering Food, 3 on Woodcutting, and 3 Dwarfs mining Gold. Since Food remains the primary focus, there is no need to reassign villagers. Rather, you should increase the numbers in each area to maintain a balance and begin producing for your military.
The most effective Norse build order for the Classical Age is as follows:
- Maintain 7 villagers gathering Food, 3 gathering Gold, and 3 gathering Wood.
- Construct three houses.
- Instruct two villagers to gather Wood.
- The instruction is to command 2 Dwarfs to extract Gold.
- Construct a Long House and Great Hall.
- Direct two villagers to gather Food.
- Have two Dwarfs mine Gold.
- Request the purchase of 10 military units, consisting of 5 Raiding Cavalry and 5 Throwing Axemen.
- Construct an Armory.
- Progress to the Heroic Age.
Heroic Age
In order to strengthen your army, focus on recruiting more powerful units, improving efficiency, and conducting reconnaissance missions to gather resources, relics, and information about potential enemies.
You will need to build a Fortress to advance in the Heroic Age, which also provides Siege units.
- Advance to the Heroic Age.
While the initial two stages of the game adhere to a specific build order, the later stages allow for a more adaptable strategy depending on available resources and unforeseen in-game circumstances, such as enemy actions. Nevertheless, it is crucial to continue raiding like a skilled Viking.
The most optimal Norse build order during the Heroic Age is as follows:
- Ensure that the total number of your villagers reaches 25, with 10 assigned to Food, 8 to Gold, and 7 to Wood.
- Construct three houses.
- Place an order for 10 units of Mythic Herser.
- Create a market.
- To improve efficiency, upgrade farming, mining, and woodcutting skills.
- Construct 3 residential properties.
- Increase your military units to approximately 40 regular units.
- To increase your Favor, scout the nearby area and utilize cavalry units, as well as Hersers, to target enemy villagers and demolish any nearby buildings.
- Gather any Relics in the vicinity using Hersers.
- Construct an additional Town Center, if feasible, to raise the Population Cap.
- Request the production of passive Gold from 2 Ox Caravans.
- Construct a Fortress.
- Progress to the Mythic Age.
To accumulate Favor in the Norse Pantheon, one must engage in combat by attacking enemy units and buildings. As such, playing aggressively and seizing map control in the early stages of the game is crucial for gaining Favor as Norse. It is important to launch attacks against opponents in order to increase your Favor.
At this point, it is crucial to approach battles strategically and avoid causing major conflicts, especially if your army is not yet large enough. Therefore, it is highly recommended to acquire a bandit or Hero Hersers as soon as possible. These powerful units not only gain Favor at a faster rate, but they can also collect Relics.
Mythic Age
Objective: Assert dominance by attacking enemies or aim to reach the final Wonder Age.
The Mythic Age is really when you become an unstoppable force in AoM Retold.
To guarantee the continuation of your resource economy, it is imperative to maintain it as the surrounding resources will be scarce by this stage. If your rivals have not yet launched an attack, it is highly probable that they will do so.
Expanding your army is crucial, and it is important to have a mix of powerful Myth units, regular soldiers, and, especially for Norse, sturdy Siege weapons.
This is the most effective Norse build order to follow in the Mythic Age:
- Ensure that you have a total of 30 villagers, with 12 assigned to gather Food, 10 to collect Gold, and 8 to harvest Wood.
- Improve the efficiency by upgrading farming, mining, and woodcutting.
- To enhance efficiency, construct additional military buildings for the units that you frequently utilize.
- Construct 5 to 10 houses.
- Purchase 5 Ballista Siege units.
- Improve farming, mining, and woodcutting.
- Double your army size again to around 75-100 units in total.
- Have a strong balance of Siege units, regular units, and Mythic Hero units, such as 10 Ballistas, 20 Hersirs, 10 Valkyrie, 5 Fenris Wolf Blood, 3 Jotuns, and the rest should be standard infantry, cavalry and ranged units depending on the strengths and weaknesses of your enemies.
- Improve the efficiency of military units.
- Investigate the secrets of the Titans at the Town Center.
- Once you have accumulated enough Favor, construct a Titan gate in order to summon a Titan.
- Construct a Wonder.
In order to advance to the Wonder Age, you will need to build a Wonder using 5,000 Food, 5,000 Wood, and 5,000 Gold. If you are having difficulty gathering these resources, you can expedite the process by utilizing your Market to trade various resources.
Wonder Age
Objective: To optimize your army’s capabilities and eliminate all adversaries using the advantages at your disposal.
The Norse’s Wonder may not be as visually impressive as others, but its upgrades are key.
In Retold, the Wonder serves as a catalyst for ending games but is not a game-ending entity on its own. As you progress into the Wonder Age, your Norse Myth units gain increased strength, and you are able to more quickly and affordably use God Powers.
Upon reaching the final stage, concentrate on launching a full-scale attack on your adversaries, annihilating them entirely. Make sure all your upgrades are completed and necessary military facilities are constructed to maintain your strength in case of defeat.
Build orders will be influenced by factors such as the opponent’s actions, the deity you have selected, and unforeseen circumstances, especially when facing experienced multiplayer opponents or higher-level AI. While the initial two stages will adhere to the prescribed build order, strategies may diverge from Stage 3 onwards, with some players opting to launch early attacks.
