Looking for the top tank heroes to play in the current season of Overwatch 2? We’ve compiled a list of the strongest options all the way down to the least effective ones. Keep reading to find out which tanks are dominating the game right now.
In the most recent season of Overwatch 2, there was a significant overhaul to almost every hero, resulting in increased health pools. Additionally, a new passive was introduced for DPS characters that reduces healing, greatly altering the gameplay experience.
To achieve this goal, we rely on Overbuff and our understanding of the current meta to assist us in identifying which heroes are excelling.
Contents
S Tier
Sigma
Despite the unstable tank meta in Season 10, Sigma remains a dependable choice. His Accretion and ultimate provide excellent crowd control, he has strong poke, and his ability to soak up damage is particularly valuable in a meta focused on DPS. Overall, Sigma is an excellent option.
A Tier
Junker Queen
Mountain
Despite a rough start to Season 9, Junker Queen’s position in the meta has significantly risen, particularly with the resurgence of a brawling, sustain-focused meta. Junker Queen excels in close combat situations, making her a perfect fit for a meta that favors close-quarters brawls.
Ramattra
Ramattra is a strong choice in Season 9’s meta due to his high sustainability and damage output. While he may not possess the same level of mobility as other top-tier tanks, his barrier and blocking abilities allow him to maintain a sturdy defense. Additionally, his Nemesis form provides him with increased movement speed, enabling him to keep up with faster heroes on the battlefield.
Doomfist
Despite having a tumultuous presence in the meta, Doomfist has managed to remain relevant throughout various Seasons. However, in Season 9, Doomfist has truly come into the spotlight. Despite the resurgence of Mauga and the brawl/sustain metas, Doomfist has surprisingly found his place due to his exceptional mobility and ability to quickly eliminate squishy targets with precise combos. This has solidified his viability in the current meta.
Mauga remains unchanged.
Ultimately, the king has passed away, or at least that was the situation in the beginning of Season 9. However, following a buff in the middle of the season, Mauga has become one of the top Tanks in the game. While not quite reaching the same level of greatness as he did during mid-season 9, Mauga remains a strong choice with impressive damage, an unstoppable movement capability, and excellent staying power.
B Tier
Idol
Despite being a strong hero, Orisa has struggled in Season 10 and has not been a popular pick in the current meta. Following a balance patch, Orisa’s viability in the meta decreased significantly due to nerfs to her abilities such as Javelin Spin and Fortify. While her damage output remains formidable, her survivability has been greatly affected.
Winston
Despite being at the top at the beginning of Season 9, Mr. Winston’s position has been affected by the evolving meta. Dive characters, including Winston, have been impacted. While he possesses high mobility, playing Winston has become challenging due to the current dominance of tanks like Orisa, Mauga, and Rammattra. Therefore, it is advisable to only choose Winston when facing other Dive heroes if you wish to play as our beloved scientist gorilla.
D.Va
Similarly to Winston, D.Va’s role in this meta is to provide both mobility and damage mitigation. However, she may struggle with sustaining herself compared to other tanky heroes. In a meta where the success of the tank often depends on outlasting the enemy’s tanks, D.Va may face a tough challenge.
Wrecking Ball
Despite initially feeling like he was back on top when Season 9 was released, Wrecking Ball’s position has since changed. As the season progressed, the rise of sustain heavy tanks and highly mobile backlines, along with the threat of DPS heroes like Soujourn who can quickly deplete his health, have made it challenging for Hammond to maintain his dominance. With the upcoming rework in Season 10, it is hoped that Wrecking Ball will once again rise to a higher position.
Character Profile: Roadhog
Ever since Season 9, Roadhog has faced significant challenges due to the changes. With the rise in hero health, his ability to execute one shot combos has been greatly diminished, and the decrease in healing has also impacted his primary means of staying alive through Take a Breather.
Despite this, Roadhog’s strength has decreased significantly, making him a less viable option for the tank role.
Zarya
Despite her impressive damage output and powerful ultimate, Zarya’s position as one of the top tanks in Overwatch 2 has been compromised. She lacks the necessary survivability and mobility to withstand the intense damage being dealt in Season 9.
Despite receiving some buffs to her damage output, Zarya remains vulnerable to being instantly eliminated, causing her to be a less sought-after hero at present.
C Tier
Reinhardt
Unfortunately, in Overwatch 2, Reinhardt continues to be the main target of bullying. This trend is not helped by Season 9, where agile heroes like Tracer and Sombra easily outmaneuver the hammer-wielding tank. Due to his lack of mobility, Reinhardt struggles to keep up with the current hero pool and is unable to effectively defend himself while also dealing damage.
