According to a report from News1 on the 5th, members of BIGBANG, including G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung, are currently in discussions to perform together as a full group at the upcoming ‘2024 MAMA Awards’ this November.
This year’s ‘MAMA Awards’ is set to take place on November 21st at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, USA, followed by its events at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, on November 22nd and 23rd. The event has gained significant attention due to its entry into the U.S. market, the largest music market in the world.
A full reunion of BIGBANG at the ‘MAMA Awards’ would mark their first performance together in approximately nine years, since 2015. In 2022, although they won the Best Vocal Performance Group category for their song ‘Still Life,’ they did not perform on stage during the ceremony.
The three members previously made a surprise appearance at Taeyang’s solo concert, ‘TAEYANG 2024 TOUR [THE LIGHT YEAR],’ which occurred this past September. Fans are now eagerly waiting to see if they will deliver another iconic performance at one of the most-watched K-pop award shows worldwide.
On the morning of August 19th, G-Dragon shared the cover photo of the digital single “Still Life” on his personal social media account, captioning it “#bigbang18thanniversary” and tagging his fellow members, Taeyang and Daesung.
Taeyang added a photo of 18 yellow hearts on Instagram, with the caption “#18thanniversary ♥” . Daesung also expressed his congratulations, saying, “2024.08.19 Congratulations on the 18th anniversary of Daesung’s debut.”
BIBANG officially debuted on August 19th, 2006, during YG Family’s 10th anniversary concert. They released their album “Bigbang” on August 29th of the same year and quickly won immense public affection with numerous hit songs spanning various genres, including ballad, dance, and hip-hop.
BIGBANG quickly swept major awards both in Korea and internationally following their debut and became one of the leading K-pop groups by winning Daesang awards just two years after they emerged on the scene. The group became renowned for their musicality and led diverse activities beyond their standard promotions, including collaborations between G-Dragon X Taeyang and G-Dragon X T.O.P.
Despite their successes, BIGBANG faced several controversies throughout their career. Originally debuting as a five-member group, G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung are the remaining members after T.O.P and Seungri departed.
The oldest member, T.O.P, faced legal issues related to marijuana use. In 2017, while serving in the military, he was investigated for past drug use, which he admitted to; subsequently, he was sentenced to 10 months in suspended jail with 2 years of probation.
After leaving YG and exiting BIGBANG, T.O.P hinted at retirement from the entertainment industry; however, he made a surprise return by joining Season 2 of Netflix’s “Squid Game,” set to premiere on December 26th.
The youngest member, Seungri, was expelled from the entertainment industry following his role in the Burning Sun Scandal. In 2022, he was imprisoned for 18 months on charges including prostitution and habitual gambling.
Since his release from Yeoju prison in February of last year, Seungri has remained out of the entertainment scene but faced backlash after being seen at a Bali club recently.
