Black Myth: Wukong Announces DLC Inspired by Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree

Black Myth: Wukong has generated significant excitement globally, transcending the gaming scene and making waves in the entertainment industry. This game has set multiple records for both sales numbers and total revenue following its release.

As a game that achieved remarkable sales within hours of its launch, Black Myth: Wukong is set to expand its universe with a new chapter. However, it will not be a traditional sequel; instead, players can look forward to a DLC, similar to Bandai Namco’s approach with Elden Ring.

1. Is Black Myth: Wukong getting a DLC?

According to a Bloomberg interview with Daniel Wu, co-founder of Hero Games, Black Myth: Wukong will indeed feature a new chapter as DLC rather than a sequel. The exact release date for the Wukong DLC will be announced at a later time.

Following the massive success of Shadow of Erdtree, Wukong aims to capitalize on this momentum with its upcoming expansion, which will also be grounded in Chinese mythology. While the release date remains unconfirmed, Bloomberg has verified this information.

The details come from a Bloomberg interview with Daniel Wu, who has played a pivotal role in funding Game Science. As the largest external shareholder in Wukong, alongside the development team at Game Science, Hero Games has significantly invested in the project.

It won’t take another six years for the next chapter in what’s planned to be a series based on Chinese mythology — though that won’t be a sequel,” said Wu, emphasizing the swift continuation of the game’s saga.

Game Science is currently developing this expansion to Wukong, which aims to delve deeper into the rich realms of Chinese mythology. This DLC presents a financially sensible option for gamers, as purchasing DLC is often more budget-friendly than investing in a full sequel.

Inspired by Elden Ring’s success, this trend of creating extensive DLCs may reshape the gaming industry’s landscape, potentially rivaling traditional sequels in content and sales performance.

2. How much did Wukong make in sales?

As for sales, Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insight at Niko Partners, states that Black Myth: Wukong has generated approximately $800 million in total revenue. This impressive figure makes sense when considering the game’s $70 million budget and the substantial effort invested over the past six years.

Daniel Wu has indicated that while Game Science has yet to turn a profit due to past losses, the stable revenue suggests that they are on a path to recover those losses shortly.

Additionally, Daniel Wu remarked, “this is the most challenging year for China’s games industry ever,” pointing out issues stemming from broader economic difficulties affecting entertainment spending and leading to several cancellations.

Another intriguing aspect discussed in the Bloomberg interview concerns a caution document circulated by the game creators. The document advised content streamers to avoid discussing specific sensitive topics, including “feminist propaganda,” COVID prevention measures, and Chinese government policies. While this approach seems controversial and not legally binding, Hero Games has declined to elaborate on the document’s contents in most instances.
