Black Myth: Wukong Developers Face Multiple Controversies Before the Game’s Debut

Black Myth Wukong, created by the Chinese game development studio Game Science, is a third-person action RPG that draws inspiration from the timeless Chinese novel Journey to the West. Its depiction of ancient mythology is remarkably authentic.

Despite our initial belief that Black Myth Wukong’s debut would be a success, the game’s development team and streaming rules have become sources of controversy. Fans are now raising concerns about Game Science’s actions, as the situation appears to be turning against them.

The developers of Black Myth Yukong are embroiled in controversies surrounding their track record of sexism, unprofessional work environment, and practice of banning content creators in exchange for game keys for using certain terms.

The work environment at Game Science Studio was accused of being sexist, with developers reportedly making inappropriate and offensive comments about women. This news understandably caused frustration among female Chinese players.

Game Science’s Sexist and Unprofessional Work Culture

A report from IGN has highlighted numerous comments from employees at the studio. These include reports of job recruitment posters boasting about “friends with benefits”in the workplace, as well as another poster stating “Fatties should f**k off.”The report also includes other vulgar comments that are likely to cause disgust.

Some developers have expressed their disapproval of women playing their games, claiming that men and women cannot enjoy the same games. This viewpoint is illogical, but unfortunately, it does not stop there.

Despite numerous complaints, the developers continued to make derogatory and unsuitable remarks, including discussions about G-spots and the use of offensive language. In fact, some went as far as to make indecent comments about characters within their own game.

The discomfort of women within the Chinese gaming community was voiced by many, with statements such as:

“The male developers responsible for misogynistic remarks have yet to face consequences for their actions. The gaming community is resistant to any change in this regard, viewing women with disrespect. Merely listening to women’s experiences is dismissed as pandering, a mere marketing ploy catering to Western notions of political correctness. It is difficult to express the depth of despair this situation brings.”

3. Banned Topics for Content Creators

Some content creators are outraged by Game Science Studio’s arbitrary restrictions on certain topics, and there are already reports of creators being banned.

A leaked document containing guidelines for content creators, including dos and don’ts, was later shared on Reddit. Several content creators also confirmed that it was not related to sponsored content.

The initial two “Do N’ts”are commonly seen in new releases, however, the final three are rather unexpected. While it is reasonable to avoid terms like “quarantine,””isolation,”or “COVID-19,”as Game Science is located in China where the pandemic originated, it is peculiar to include them in guidelines for a mythology-based game that has no relation to these subjects.

Moreover, the term “feminist propaganda”could pertain to allegations of sexism within the development team of Black Myth: Wukong.

Despite the quality of the game, the negative conduct of the developers and the unfavorable reputation of Game Science studio could potentially lead to the downfall of Black Myth Wukong.
