Black Myth: Wukong Director Emotionally Criticizes The Game Awards: ‘I Came Here for Nothing’

Following the disappointing outcome at The Game Awards 2024, where Black Myth: Wukong was overlooked for the prestigious Game of the Year title, the game’s Director has expressed his discontent regarding the event.

The highly anticipated Game Awards, which celebrated a pivotal year in gaming, crowned Astrobot as the Game of the Year. This decision, however, has sparked controversy, especially among fans who believed Black Myth: Wukong deserved greater recognition. The game had already seen remarkable success, becoming the second-most played title on Steam shortly after its launch, marking a triumphant debut for Game Science.

Game Science’s confidence in Black Myth: Wukong was clear, making the loss of the top award particularly hard to swallow for its creators. Feng Ji, the Director and CEO, took to the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo to voice his grievances and to critique the decision-making process behind the awards.

Emotional Reaction from Black Myth: Wukong Team

Despite not securing the Game of the Year accolade, Black Myth: Wukong had a remarkable presence at the ceremony, receiving nominations in five categories, winning accolades for Best Action-Adventure and the Player’s Choice award.

Yet, these achievements didn’t satisfy Feng Ji, who voiced his feelings in a translated post on Weibo. He stated, “I must admit that there are disappointments and regrets. The games nominated this year are all excellent, but I really don’t understand the selection criteria for this year’s Game of the Year. I came here for nothing!”

Reflecting on his optimism prior to the awards, Feng revealed he had even prepared a Game of the Year acceptance speech two years prior. He acknowledged feeling a sense of anger when their hard work went unrecognized, a sentiment echoed by fans and players disheartened by the results.

Alanah Pearce, a writer from Sony Santa Monica, who attended the event, noted the pained expressions of the Wukong team during the ceremony. “The Wukong team were crying when they did not win, which is definitely unusual,”she commented during a livestream. “They were upset, definitely upset when they didn’t win.”

Notwithstanding its omission from the Game of the Year titles, Black Myth: Wukong remains a commercial triumph, with developers currently focused on creating downloadable content (DLC) for the game. With the success illustrated by Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Game Science could find themselves vying for top honors once more in upcoming events.
