Players of Black Ops 6 are expressing their dissatisfaction over a new “pay to win” anime-themed weapon skin. The community is calling for developers to modify a crucial in-game setting in response to concerns surrounding this new content.
In the current landscape of live service games, the introduction of new cosmetic items has become routine, with titles like Call of Duty (CoD) frequently updating their virtual stores. From festive skins to collaborations such as those with Squid Game, there’s a wide array of cosmetics available. However, a recent release in Black Ops 6 has sparked controversy for all the wrong reasons.
The Controversial Anime Weapon Bundle
The contentious item is the KOMPAKT 92 SMG, which is part of the Tracer Pack bundle available in the CoD store. Specifically, this bundle, dubbed the Snowtime Showtime, features an eye-catching anime aesthetic and is priced at 2,000 CoD Points, translating to approximately $20 USD. While the package includes a variety of cosmetic enhancements, it is the Halpipe Handler weapon Blueprint included that is causing significant uproar.
This particular Blueprint features a distinctive kill effect that produces a large animated sphere upon defeating opponents. Many players have reported that this visual effect obstructs their view during gameplay, leading to increased frustration and complaints, especially during the festive gaming season.
This anime bundle in Black Ops 6 has come under criticism due to its disruptive visual effects.
Voicing their frustration, one Reddit user shared their experience with the weapon effect that resulted in their demise. Upon respawning, the animated sphere obstructed their line of sight, preventing them from responding to an enemy attack in time. “Is this not pay to win? Genuinely couldn’t see sh**,” the player stated. Another player echoed this sentiment, saying, “Matches were unplayable with this sh** in my face.”

Concerns have also been raised regarding the approval process as one user questioned, “How did this effect pass approval and testing?” Another user went as far as to suggest that the bundle might not have undergone any testing at all, labeling the effect as comparable to being hit with a flash grenade.
Fortunately, players can disable these unique kill animations through the game’s settings by navigating to the visual effects tab and toggling off all gore effects. However, this action removes all gore elements, including dismemberment and blood, raising further criticism.
As a result, many players are urging developers to create a standalone option specifically for disabling kill effects in Black Ops 6. “It should have its own option,” one player argued. “You shouldn’t have to turn gore off to get rid of these effects.”
As of now, the developers from Treyarch and Raven have not addressed the issue. This comes at a time when they are already facing challenges with a dwindling player base, exacerbated by ongoing problems related to cheating within the game.
