Bleach Actor Reveals Regret About Thousand-Year Blood War Anime

While the final installment of Bleach TYBW focuses on the epic confrontation with Yhwach, voice actor Hideo Ishikawa shares a poignant regret regarding the series.

In Bleach TYBW Part 3, viewers bid farewell to Jushiro Ukitake, the commander of Squad 13. With the demise of the Soul King, the three realms face imminent peril. Ukitake plays a crucial role in maintaining balance, as his very existence ensures the stability of the flow of souls to and from the Soul Society.

His passing could unleash catastrophic chaos throughout the world. Amidst the turmoil that engulfs the Soul Society, Ukitake bravely steps up, temporarily assuming the Soul King’s role. He sacrifices himself during the Kamikake ritual, managing to stabilize the Soul Society for a brief ten minutes.

In an enlightening interview with Oricon, Ishikawa expressed his dissatisfaction regarding Ukitake’s portrayal, stating: “Ukitake is the sole captain in the current Gotei 13 who hasn’t ever invoked his bankai! I wish I could have had the chance to say ‘bankai’ at least once (laughs). I’ve heard many others declare their bankai during dubbing and while watching the series. When it comes to Morita, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard ‘bankai!’ (laughs). It honestly made me envious.”

Ukitake’s backstory is marked by tragedy; he was diagnosed with a severe lung ailment at just three years old. His parents prayed at the shrine of Mimihagi (the Soul King’s right hand), asking for a miracle to save their son. Mimihagi answered their prayers, allowing Ukitake to survive and eventually take on the role of a Soul Reaper.

Strong enough to ascend to the rank of Squad Captain, it’s implied that he must have acquired the ability to wield a Bankai. Nevertheless, the series never showcases his Bankai, denying his voice actor the thrill of saying “Bankai.”

Bankai abilities are typically incredibly powerful and are often showcased alongside spectacular battles. However, what we witness from Jushiro is limited to his Shikai, Sōgyo no Kotowaria, featuring dual blades.
