Within the manga, Tite Kubo illustrated how Yhwach manipulated Ichigo Kurosaki’s Quincy blood to ultimately kill the Soul King, yet did not clarify why Ichigo was essential to this act.
This episode explained that only Ichigo, possessing the powers of five distinct races—Soul Reapers, Quincies, Hollows, Fullbringers, and Humans—could shatter the seal on the Soul King and carry out the execution. In essence, Yhwach was unable to kill the Soul King on his own; he required Ichigo’s participation.
The episode also revealed that Yhwach had predicted Ichigo’s role in the Soul King’s death. That is why he reminded Ichigo that his powers were meant for this very moment, effectively bringing forth Ichigo’s ultimate nightmare.
From a production standpoint, Pierrot Films delivered a compelling portrayal of the Soul King’s demise. While the manga portrayed these events somewhat hurriedly and depicted Yhwach as erratic, the anime offered a more composed version of the antagonist, fully cognizant of his plans. The reactions from Ichigo’s friends, such as Orihime, Yoruichi, and Kisuke Urahara at the Seireitei, were handled skillfully.
Despite the limitations of animation for this scene, the Soul King’s death was executed smoothly, with Ichigo’s blade shattering the crystal that sealed the Soul King and ultimately severing him in half highlighted effectively.
Bleach TYBW Part 3 Episode 2 Review: The Identity of the Soul King
One of the episode’s pivotal revelations was the identity of the Soul King. Throughout the manga, Kubo refrained from disclosing the esteemed character’s name. However, during the previous installment, when Yhwach recited the Aushwahlen’s poem, speculations arose that “the coffin of Adyneus”might refer to the Soul King, suggesting that Adyneus could be his name.
In the latest episode, this theory was affirmed. Bleach TYBW Part 3 Episode 2 confirms that the Soul King’s name is indeed Adyneus. However, further insights into the Soul King’s life prior to his role as the world’s keystone remain undisclosed.
The only new information gleaned from this episode is that the Soul King possessed Almighty eyes before becoming the central figure of the realms. It was revealed that he foresaw the looming catastrophe for the Quincies predicated by the Soul Reapers, yet chose to forsake them.
