Despite Blizzard’s decision to charge 500 coins for a pack of Mirror Universe sprays, Overwatch 2 players have expressed their discontent and labeled the offer as a “scam.”
The issue of cosmetic purchases has sparked controversy in the gaming industry as studios strive to maximize profits from their free-to-play games, and Overwatch 2 is not exempt from this trend.
On May 7, the Overwatch Shop released a fresh selection of cosmetics, including a bundle of six Mirror Universe sprays for the Mirrorwatch event, available for 500 coins or $5 USD on the official website.
Generally, sprays are among the least desirable unlockables and are frequently given out as free event rewards. Therefore, the community was unhappy with this situation.

After the sprays were revealed, players of Overwatch 2 started criticizing Blizzard, stating that they were not willing to use their premium currency on something that they believed should be earned through gameplay.
One player noted that the challenge rewards could have easily been obtained.
Another person rhetorically questioned, “Should I really spend my valuable 600 battle pass coins on 5 sprays?”Their response continued, “No way. It’s almost embarrassing to consider.”
Another person chimed in, stating that the items were originally intended to be event rewards, but the company decided to sell them in order to make a profit.
Niandra, a content creator, was equally baffled by the decision. They expressed their confusion by questioning, “Are we really going to charge premium currency for a spray pack?”in a tweet.
Some individuals were also deterred by the expensive sprays, referring to them as a “scam.”
Although there has been significant backlash, Blizzard has not yet responded. However, as shown in the recent Helldivers 2 controversy, consumer actions can influence the future of a game. It remains to be seen if enough OW2 players will boycott purchasing the sprays in protest.
