After some uncertainty, the beloved series Blue Exorcist has officially been placed on hiatus as its creator, Kazue Kato, focuses on recovery from an unspecified illness.
Since its debut in 2009, Blue Exorcist has grown into a hugely popular Shonen series. Centered on Rin Okumura, the literal son of Satan, the manga narrates his journey in exorcism as he strives to thwart the dark lord’s return.
To date, the franchise has released three successful anime seasons, with Kazue Kato’s manga continuing to thrive on a monthly basis. However, she is currently taking a break due to health issues.
Kazue announced on X/Twitter that she has been undergoing treatment for her illness, which required surgery. Thankfully, her recovery is progressing well, but she needs time to recuperate fully.

While she had previously managed to juggle hospital visits and her work on Blue Exorcist, she now requires a genuine period of rest. The manga has been absent from Shonen Jump magazine since August and is set to return on November 4, 2024.
Like many long-running stories, Blue Exorcist has taken periodic breaks. These interruptions have become more prominent in recent years, indicating that Kazue may have been dealing with her condition for some time. Fortunately, it appears she is on the path to a complete recovery.
Coincidentally, the timing is ideal as Season 4 is slated to premiere in October, following the climax of Season 3 in March. Season 3 focused on the Shimane Illuminate Arc, and now the storyline shifts toward the Exorcist Exam Arc.
As one of the most anticipated anime in the fall and winter lineups, Blue Exorcist is set for a significant year, and fans hope for its continued success once Kazue is fully recovered.
