Borderlands receives scathing reviews and low Rotten Tomatoes score, dubbed worst movie of the year by critics.

After an extensive wait, followers of Borderlands will be able to revisit Pandora through the upcoming live-action film. Nevertheless, several are already labeling it a “catastrophe”(and that’s putting it mildly).

On August 8, Borderlands made its debut in theaters with Cate Blanchett playing the role of bounty hunter Lilith. However, it’s worth noting that there is a 30-year age gap between the two versions.

Despite its recent release, the film has already faced negative reactions from fans. Social media posts and reviews have been overwhelmingly negative, resulting in a shockingly low score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

One fan took to X/Twitter to express their disappointment with Borderlands, stating, “The film is a disaster. It is filled with every cliché imaginable and lacks the mayhem and imagination of the games. The characters are annoying, the humor falls flat, and the visuals are unappealing. The cast has absolutely no chemistry.”

Another individual concurred, stating, “Borderlands is without a doubt one of the most disappointing films I have seen this year and a huge letdown for one of my beloved video game series.”

Eli Roth drains all the personality and visual style with the ferocity of a nocturnal vampire. He appropriates the title of Borderlands and the identities of its characters, crafting his own mythology that strays from the beloved elements of the games.

According to Alistair Ryder from AwardsWatch, the film Borderlands is a prime example of a terrible movie that lacks any unique qualities to make it a potential cult favorite. Clocking in at only 102 minutes, it still manages to feel tedious and unoriginal, making it a truly insufferable experience.

Billie Melissa, from Men’s Journal, concurred with the sentiment that if Borderlands fails to deter studio executives from eagerly pursuing every IP that crosses their desks, then nothing will.

According to Andrew J. Salazar, a writer for DiscussingFilm, the film adaptation of Borderlands is filled with Easter eggs and visual nods to the video games. However, he believes that director Eli Roth’s attempt at the movie falls short and is a prime example of the video game movie curse at its worst.

Despite some critiques, our review of Borderlands was still positive. Our rating of three stars reflected our opinion that the action movie was decent, and we noted, “While it may not follow the events of 2009’s Pandora exactly, viewers must be willing to accept that in order to fully enjoy this film.”
