Despite its popularity, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga has faced criticism from animanga fans for its portrayal of the protagonist. In contrast to the previous manga, which depicted the protagonist as a cheerful boy, the sequel series has shown a significant change in his personality, leading fans to accuse manga creator Masashi Kishimoto of making him “edgy.”
Despite being serialized for over a year, the manga has only recently revealed the reason behind the protagonist’s sudden personality shift. Contrary to fans’ previous assumptions, Boruto’s change was not an attempt to mimic his master Sasuke Uchiha, but rather the result of carrying a heavy burden for two years.

Explaining Boruto’s Brooding Personality in Two Blue Vortex Chapter 13
In chapter 13 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, a flashback was revealed of Kashin Koji and Boruto’s initial meeting. While recounting this encounter, Kashin Koji described his newly developed power to foresee events in the future to the protagonist.
By utilizing his ability, the Jiraiya clone had observed various potential outcomes, all of which resulted in the demise of every individual on the planet after Kawaki was consumed by the Ten Tails. Despite this dire situation, the simplest solution would have been to eliminate Kawaki. However, the protagonist was unwilling to resort to this option. Instead, he longed to reconcile with his brother and rebuild their family.
Upon discovering the various potential futures, the protagonist’s demeanor shifted to one of excitement. This was a stark contrast to the previous year, during which he had trained aimlessly without a clear purpose. Thanks to Kashin Koji’s ability, he now had a specific goal to strive for, motivating him to train and prepare for battle. However, as time went on, he began to understand the gravity of the commitment he had made.
Despite being accustomed to undertaking team missions assigned by the Hidden Leaf Village, the task of saving the world alone proved to be a daunting challenge for the protagonist. After bearing the immense weight of this responsibility and safeguarding others for a period of approximately two years, the protagonist underwent significant transformations. As a result, the once cheerful demeanor of the protagonist was replaced with a more menacing one in the Two Blue Vortex manga.
Despite this, the protagonist has also revealed glimpses of his authentic self. Although he remained focused and resolute in most circumstances, the sight of his little sister Himawari after three years caused him to lower his defenses.
A corresponding situation occurred when the protagonist was finally able to reunite with Sarada and Sumire properly. Although he was overjoyed to see Sarada after three years, he maintained a serious demeanor. However, this all changed when Sarada, whose memories were unaffected by the Omnipotence’s switch, embraced him. As a result, the accusations against manga creator Masashi Kishimoto were baseless, as the manga did not attempt to make Boruto “edgy,”but instead gave him a personality that was fitting for his circumstances.
- Sarada’s end-of-series powers could mimic Kaguya Otsutsuki’s, and the anime may have foreshadowed it
- Why Kishimoto not revealing Sarada’s “trump card”against Hidari & Jura in Two Blue Vortex, was the perfect decision, explained
- Himawari easily performing a Bijuu bomb in Two Blue Vortex chapter 11 isn’t surprising and Kishimoto already explained why
