Boston Dynamics has unveiled a new iteration of its robodog Spot, which now features a coat of fur and exceptionally impressive dance abilities.
Boston Dynamics, a renowned robotics company famous for its humanoid robots and robodogs, recently unveiled a new addition to their lineup named Sparkles on YouTube. This new robot, while fundamentally similar to the company’s existing Spot Robodog, has a playful twist – it is covered in fur.
The YouTube video’s description states that the suit of fur is a “custom costume”designed by Boston Dynamics to delve into the merging of robotics, art, and entertainment.
The intention is to transform the commonly known robot dog Spot, seen as a representation of the looming robot domination, into a more approachable character from the Disney realm.
The footage depicts the furry robot and the original Spot robodog dancing together, moving from side to side and even playfully touching noses at one point. Despite this, Boston Dynamics has not explicitly stated the intended purpose of the robot. It is possible that the company was merely commemorating International Dance Day, which fell on April 29th.
The internet was filled with amusing responses to the robot. One commenter exclaimed, “At last, we have achieved it. Humans have created: Dog!”Another person joked, “Everyone will want to pet the dog until its neck stretches 4 feet.”
One commenter suggested that after adding fur to Spot, it was now time to add skin to Atlas. Speaking of Atlas, Boston Dynamics recently retired the humanoid robot and replaced it with an electrically powered version that is significantly lighter and thinner.
