Despite lacking formal acting training, Wang Yibo rose to A-list stardom thanks to the success of the C-drama “The Untamed,”making him one of the top young stars in Asia with a massive fan base since his birth year of 1997. However, his fans have recently been attacking his colleagues without any apparent effort from the actor to manage his fanbase. Despite their behavior, Wang Yibo continues to be cast in leading roles in major TV and film productions.
During the Weibo Movie Night event on the evening of June 16, Wang Yibo, Huang Bo, and director Da Peng were featured. As director Da Peng accepted an award on stage, he expressed his gratitude to producer Chen Zhi Xi for making the creation of the film “One and Only”possible. He also interacted with the male lead, who stood beside him to receive the award. Da Peng also acknowledged and thanked the actors who were not present at the event but played a significant role in the success of the film.
Despite the fact that Wang Yibo was also present at the event, seated in the audience, Da Peng made no mention of him. This led to criticism from Wang Yibo’s fans, who accused Da Peng of being ungrateful and disrespectful towards the actor, ultimately causing embarrassment for him. Consequently, Chinese media discovered that Da Peng had unfollowed Wang Yibo on Weibo after the event.
As a result, Wang Yibo’s supporters became even more annoyed and took to Da Peng’s Weibo page to express their frustration. They questioned whether the film would have been produced without Wang Yibo and stated that they would not have watched it without him. Some even pointed out that Da Peng failed to acknowledge Wang Yibo, who they believe played a crucial role in the movie.
During the promotion of “One and Only,”Wang Yibo made some controversial statements, such as saying “What happens to the film afterward is not my concern, as my job as an actor is done,”according to QQ. At roadshows, Wang Yibo occasionally misspoke, leading to director Da Peng stepping in to clarify.
Wang Yibo’s fans have a history of causing issues and creating discomfort for other artists. Recently, actor Wang Yang, who worked with Wang Yibo on “War of Faith,”was forced to delete his compliments towards the singer after facing constant attacks from his fans.
According to QQ, Wang Yang and Wang Yibo were both cast in the TV drama “War of Faith,”with Wang Yibo being introduced first as the main male lead. Wang Yang, who was introduced after Li Qin, was also recognized as a prominent actor. However, when the production company iQiYi submitted both Wang Yang and Wang Yibo for the Best Actor (Magnolia Award), only Wang Yang advanced to the final round.
Despite Wang Yang’s nomination for Best Actor, Wang Yibo’s fans were still outraged, arguing that he deserved the nomination for Best Supporting Actor instead. They believed that Wang Yang had taken the opportunity away from their idol.
Despite the initial sympathy for Wang Yibo’s missed nomination, his fans took to bombarding Wang Yang’s personal page with curses and vile language, as well as writing letters to the Magnolia Award organizers. This caused an uproar and led media and art management agencies to intervene. As a result, Wang Yibo faced criticism for not managing his fans and allowing them to insult his colleagues.
In addition, Sina’s management banned two prominent supporters of Wang Yibo, both of whom have hundreds of thousands of followers. Weibo, China’s biggest social media platform, removed more than 3,700 posts that violated its policies and closely examined 654 accounts for repeated incitement.
Despite the controversy, Wang Yang stated that his focus remained on acting. Nevertheless, he did remove his compliments for Wang Yibo from his page.
QQ, a Chinese media site, also characterizes Wang Yibo as a polarizing young celebrity. He has received criticism for his rigid acting style and exaggerated facial expressions in emotionally charged scenes. Additionally, Wang Yibo has been criticized for consistently projecting a cold and distant demeanor during media appearances and giving brief, unsatisfying responses, causing frustration among reporters. His fans are becoming weary and frustrated with his frequent controversies.
Adding to the issue, not only are casual fans dissatisfied with Wang Yibo, but even devoted fans are starting to turn their backs on him. On June 16, a well-known fan page with a substantial following of 270,000 followers declared their decision to no longer support the actor. Additionally, another fan with a considerable following of 200,000 followers has chosen to switch their support to actor Huang Junjie.
Sohu reported that fans were disappointed with Wang Yibo’s constant distant expression. During the Weibo Movie Night, he surprised fans by appearing with a natural, unpolished face. Fans also expressed their dissatisfaction with his frequent use of inappropriate wigs.
Additionally, as per QQ, Wang Yibo has been without a new film crew for more than 400 days. His previous project has already wrapped up, and it will likely be a considerable amount of time before he unveils any new work. This undeniably has an impact on his reputation and professional growth.
