A courageous Chinese woman has gained widespread attention after valiantly defending herself against an attacker wielding a knife, using only her umbrella. Despite her newfound fame, she has chosen to forgo lucrative livestreaming opportunities that have arisen as a result of her heroic actions.
The incident unfolded on September 11, 2024, when a photographer attacked his client after she expressed dissatisfaction with her photos and refused to settle the bill. In the heat of the moment, two chefs and a tourist stepped in to assist, showcasing remarkable bravery.
A Heroine Emerges: The Floral Dress Girl
Among the heroes was Liu Yang, a tourist who quickly became known online as “Floral Dress Girl.”Armed with nothing but her umbrella, she astutely utilized the unconventional tool to halt the assailant, preventing further harm to the distressed woman.
In recognition of her bravery, the Suzhou Public Security Bureau honored Yang with the title of “Hero for Justice and Courage.” However, rather than capitalizing on her moment in the spotlight, she declined numerous business offers that flooded in after the incident. Yang expressed concerns that profiting from her actions would diminish the integrity of her courageous deed.
Influencer Offers Declined
As reported by the South China Morning Post, Yang received various proposals for endorsements, including an offer to promote umbrellas via livestream. Despite pressure from businesses and friends, she remained resolute in her decision to abstain from monetizing her experience.
“You are foolish to pass up the money,” asserted one company representative, while her peers urged her to take advantage of her viral status. Nevertheless, in an interview with Chongqing Daily News Group, Yang shared her apprehensions about potential cyberbullying and her belief that commercializing her moment of bravery would feel inappropriate.
Reflecting on the incident, Yang stated, “It felt like a scene from a movie. My instinct to save lives may have been influenced by the straightforward nature and sense of justice of people from Chongqing, where I’m from. But to me, it’s just a small thing that happened in my life, and it is in the past now.”
She also mentioned that she avoids revisiting the site of the attack due to the psychological trauma it triggered.
Public Response to Heroism
Yang’s decision to not pursue an influencer lifestyle has garnered admiration from across China. Many citizens have expressed their respect for her principles, with one saying, “She’s truly admirable for not turning her bravery into a livestreaming opportunity.” Another individual declared, “She is the real Umbrella Heroine!”
This incident is reminiscent of a similar event in 2023 when another woman gained fame online after she deflected a chair thrown at her during a chaotic brawl at a Waffle House.
