The highly anticipated Yuri on Ice movie has officially been confirmed as canceled for good.
Despite being one of the most beloved sports anime, the production of the upcoming Yuri on Ice movie, which was being worked on for seven years, has been officially canceled by MAPPA, the studio in charge. Sadly, there are no plans for a future revival of the project.
The anime received high praise for its portrayal of mental health and LGBTQ+ representation within the world of figure skating. Both critics and viewers were impressed by the series’ authentic storytelling and seamless animation.
Despite its tremendous success, MAPPA announced a prequel movie in 2017. The upcoming film, titled Yuri on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence, would focus on the early years of Viktor Nikiforov’s career as a world champion figure skater.
Despite high demand and excitement from the anime community, there had been minimal updates on the production of the anime movie. It wasn’t until 2019 when MAPPA finally provided a sneak peek of what was in store for the highly anticipated Yuri on Ice movie.
In January 2019, a teaser trailer for the film was initially released in Japan. However, it was not made available to the rest of the world until November 2020. Despite the initial excitement surrounding the teaser’s release, no further updates were provided.
Despite years of anticipation and high hopes for an equally impeccable animation and touching storyline, fans of Yuri on Ice have been disappointed by the slow progress of the movie’s production, which has dampened much of the excitement surrounding it.
In April 2024, MAPPA openly admitted that the movie had been permanently canceled. The studio issued a formal apology on the official website, expressing gratitude to fans for their support of Yuri on Ice and acknowledging their disappointment for not being able to fulfill their expectations.
Despite continuous discussions and efforts by the production committee and staff to create and deliver the movie, unforeseen circumstances have led us to the difficult decision of halting the production, as explained by the studio.
Despite the news being a disappointment for many eagerly awaiting fans, there were also some expectations for the Yuri on Ice movie to fizzle out due to its lack of development over the years. However, we all share in the sadness of the cancellation of such a promising film.
