Breaking News: McDonald’s Hacked by Crypto Scammer on Instagram

The official Instagram page of McDonald’s was temporarily hacked by a crypto scammer, who claimed to have “rug pulled”$700,000 worth of Solana from unsuspecting fans.

In recent years, with the growing popularity of crypto, there has been a surge in the number of popular social media pages being hacked by fraudulent individuals.

McDonald’s, one of the most renowned fast food chains, is the latest victim of a crypto hack. On August 21, 2024, the restaurant temporarily lost control of its Instagram page.

Following the hack, McDonald’s has managed to regain access to its page, but not before news of the incident spread through social media platforms.

Shared on X by Unusual Whales, the hacker briefly promoted a Grimace cryptocurrency and reportedly used it to defraud unaware followers of $700,000.

The individual responsible for the scheme updated McDonald’s Instagram bio to read: “We apologize, but you have just fallen victim to India_X_Kr3w’s rug pull. Thank you for the $700,000 in Solana.”

This is just the most recent high-profile account to fall victim to fraudulent activity. On August 19, 2024, the popular tech YouTuber Linus Tech Tips had their primary Twitter/X account seized by hackers.

During an episode of the WAN Show, Linus explained how it occurred, revealing that they had fallen victim to an email scam. At a pool party, the YouTuber had received an email alleging that their account had been accessed in Russia. In response, they quickly took action to secure it.

Despite Linus using a link to log into his account, the email turned out to be fake. As a result, the scammers gained full access to his account.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of McDonald’s becoming a victim to the same fate, this serves as a reminder of the persuasive nature of email scams and how even the smallest of distractions can lead to significant consequences.

Now that the popular Big Mac restaurant has regained control of the account, they can resume promoting their YuGiOh x Hello Kitty Happy Meal collaboration and their highly sought-after Collector’s cups.
