Variety reported on August 1 (local time) that Universal Pictures has obtained the rights to Britney Spears’ highly successful memoir “The Woman in Me”and has already started working on the movie with director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, known for their work on “Wicked.”
Furthermore, on social media, Britney Spears revealed the details of this “secret project” and praised Platt for consistently creating her favorite movies. She also encouraged fans to keep an eye out for future updates.
Following a highly competitive bidding war, Universal secured the rights to the memoir of the Grammy award-winning author, which was published last October and has sold over 2.5 million copies in the U.S. alone.
In her autobiography, Britney Spears candidly recounts her rise to pop superstardom, starting from her time on the “Mickey Mouse Club” to her widely publicized and closely examined case involving her guardianship, with both honesty and wit.
The memoir was praised by Variety for its “brutally honest”portrayal, delving deeply into her past with former boyfriend Justin Timberlake and her family dynamics. It also reveals the predatory behavior of those who attempted to manipulate her life.
Earlier, the singer created controversy with her revelation in the book that Timberlake had pressured her into getting an abortion. In that moment, she also disclosed that Justin was against the idea of having a child, stating that they were not prepared for parenthood and were too young.
According to Britney Spears, she would not have chosen to have an abortion if the decision had been hers alone. She also shared that Justin had expressed his certainty in not wanting to become a father. She described the experience of having an abortion as “one of the most painful things”she had ever gone through.
