Brutal pirate TV series with huge Rotten Tomatoes score comes to Netflix

A top-rated show from the 2010s has recently been added to Netflix, combining elements of Pirates of the Caribbean and Game of Thrones.

Despite producing popular shows like Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Virgin River, Netflix has also achieved significant success by licensing series from other streaming services and broadcasters. Young Sheldon, for example, has gained even more popularity since being added to Netflix’s library, while Suits broke numerous records. Additionally, Killing Eve currently holds the third spot on Netflix’s top 10 chart in the US.

Recently, another immensely popular series from the last ten years has made its way to Netflix: Black Sails, the violent and captivating pirate show that originally aired on Starz. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine are the creators of this series, which was produced by Michael Bay. All four seasons are currently accessible for streaming on Netflix, and both longtime fans and new viewers are excited to embark on a re-watch or experience it for the first time.

For viewers who missed the original 2014-2017 airing, the show is set two decades prior to the events depicted in Treasure Island. It primarily centers around Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his crew aboard The Walrus during the “Golden Age of Piracy.”

The title card in the first episode provides context: “In 1715, in the West Indies, the pirates of New Providence Island posed a threat to maritime trade in the region. They were deemed hostis humani generis, enemies of all humanity, by the laws of all civilized nations. In response, the pirates adopted their own philosophy… to wage war against the world.”

Luke Arnold co-stars as John Silver with Hannah New, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper, Zach McGowan, Toby Schmitz, and Clara Paget.

Despite its second season receiving a perfect 100% rating, Black Sails consistently received critical acclaim throughout all of its seasons, with an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 81%.

There is even an entire episode dedicated to Michael Bay, and we cannot forget Bear McCreary – the title intro is definitely not something to be missed!”

Despite the abundance of violence and sex, that should not be the sole reason for watching it. As one viewer wrote, the show’s captivating nature stems from its intricate characters, intense political dynamics, and numerous betrayals, rather than the excessive nudity and attractive individuals frequently featured on screen.

Now available on Netflix is Black Sails. Additionally, you can discover which other TV shows are currently streaming this month and which binge-worthy series you should consider adding to your watch list.
